Dublin-based trio Fastriser returns with “Magpie,” an excellent new single that blends indie melodies with math rock finesse. Released as their fifth track this year, “Magpie” is both a poetic metaphor for survival and an unflinching sonic statement. Rooted in the unsettling springtime ritual of magpies bullying blackbirds, the song uses this avian drama as a broader allegory for resilience, displacement, and coexistence.
Driven by raw emotion and recorded live in a single take, “Magpie” is performed in 7/4 time, a daring rhythmic choice that contributes to the song’s electrifying urgency. Fastriser, composed of Alex McMahon, Conor Murray, and Bobby McMahon, combines intricate riffs, delicate percussion, and melodic vocals into a thrilling, shape-shifting indie-infused experimental rock soundscape.
