Blackest Heart – There Will Be Light 12″ EP (Engineer Records)

It takes courage to wear your heart on your sleeve. It takes even more to shout it from a mountaintop, to cry it out in sound, and to shape raw emotion into something as artful as There Will Be Light, the debut 12″ EP by Blackest Heart. As soon as you press play, you know this is not just another modern rock release. This is a band with a sincere and marvelously executed vision. Formed in 2024, Blackest Heart does not play it safe. They do not follow trends. They do not chase a market. What they do is let all those honest feeling thought catchy, memorable, and engaging melodic modern rock music. There Will Be Light a sonic compass. These songs move between blinding transparency and emotional dusk. They navigate discomfort, perseverance, hope, and heartbreak. The record simultaneously reflects and searches for the light. With every beat and riff, it reminds us that even the darkest heart can burn bright. Blackest Heart operates at the intersection of modern indie rock, alternative, post-hardcore, and pop punk. But they are not confined by labels. Their sound is kinetic and alive. It stretches, twists, and expands. One moment you’re in the midst of a crashing, chaotic anthem. The next, you’re floating through melodic constraint. There’s a freedom in their structures, a refusal to settle. Songs start in one place and end somewhere entirely different. But every moment makes sense and every transition feels earned.

Their musicianship is outstanding. These are players who know their instruments, but more importantly, they know their emotional core. Guitars shimmer and punch. They weave clean lines and heavy chords into dynamic, ever-shifting patterns. From cathartic breakdowns to delicate interludes, the guitars lead the way, sometimes aggressively, sometimes with vulnerability. The rhythm section is equally essential. The drumming is crisp and dynamic. Beats, fills, accents, and pace changes are not just technical, they’re emotional cues. They set the mood and guide the story. The bass is more than a backbone. It adds warmth and weight. You feel it as much as you hear it. It holds everything together while also standing on its own. Still, vocals are the centerpiece of this epic sonic journey and a significant detail where Blackest Heart truly finds its identity. These vocal harmonies are expressive, flexible, and commanding. These are not screams into the void, they are significant messages, cries for connection, and statements of intent. Whether melodic or raw, the vocals always feel close, like someone whispering or shouting just inches away. Intimacy like this is rare in modern indie records, but Blackest Heart unquestionably know how to convey emotions through music. Lyrically, There Will Be Light is introspective but not solipsistic. The themes are deeply personal, yet universal. There is pain, doubt, and reckoning, but there is also tremendous strength, and ultimately, a belief in survival. The light referenced in the title is not far away, bu it’s chased through every chorus and every bridge.

This is a heavy EP, emotionally and sonically, but it never sinks into self-pity. There is joy in the craft. There’s playfulness in the shifts and refrains. Some moments are even fun, in that way catharsis can be. You dance not in spite of the sadness, but because of it. You jump, shout, and sweat as part of the healing. Blackest Heart understands the power of contrast. Loud is not loud without soft. Fast means nothing without slow. They use silence and restraint as tools, not afterthoughts. When the noise returns, it hits harder. And when they hold back, you lean in closer. The production is clean, but not enormously polished. Every layer is audible, every nuance preserved. The mix gives room for the instruments to breathe, yet keeps everything tightly focused. This is a record that feels good in headphones, but even better blasted in an open room. There Will Be Light may only be an EP in length, but it feels expansive in scope. There are no weak tracks. Each song holds its own weight. Each brings a new mood, a new arrangement, a new glimpse into their emotional landscape. Together, they form a complete arc. You reach the final note and feel like you’ve been somewhere. Like you’ve changed a little. Blackest Heart is a young band, but this is the work of mature artists. They know how to shape narrative and structure. They know when to hold back and when to let go. They are not afraid of sincerity. They are not embarrassed by big feelings. That confidence allows them to be vulnerable and vulnerability is where the magic happens. If there is any justice in modern rock, Blackest Heart will be heard. Their voice and sound matter. And with There Will Be Light, they’ve given us more than songs. They’ve given us a reason to believe that real connection, emotion, and artistry still have a place on the stage. There will be light and Blackest Heart will be the ones holding the torch.
