Night Collectors – heat & fury EP (Aagoo, Cardinal Fuzz)

heat & fury” is the latest release by Night Collectors, an outstanding quartet based in the San Francisco Bay Area. It’s their first piece of work this year, arriving as an adequate follow-up of “One Thousand Years / Transmissions,” a critically acclaimed 7″ released in 2022 that you should also check out as soon as possible. “heat & fury” carries five excellent compositions that will satisfy not only psychedelic rock fans but also those picky music enthusiasts searching for expertly assembled, flawlessly performed music. Sonically, perhaps their music dominantly explores fundamentals of the mentioned music genre, but you’ll also stumble upon other complementary styles. Night Collectors incorporated garage, alternative, experimental, indie, and art rock into their music, creating a multilayered listening experience that seamlessly levitates between nostalgia and modern sound. These additional elements act as more than necessary enhancements that undoubtedly improve particular segments or the entire songs but the band remains loyal to the primary sonic direction all the time. Therefore, their experimentations with different approaches and complementary styles resulted in a profoundly complex material that tackles all the senses.

Night Collectors immediately pull you into a sonic whirlwind with “One Thousand Years,” a composition where reverby vocal harmonies guide the listening apparatus while the generously fuzzy guitar works create a luxuriant backdrop for all the vocals to shine upon. The comprehensive collection of catchy, memorable, engaging, repeatable riffs immediately transports you into another realm while the equally intricate, warm-sounding basslines and well-accentuated rhythmic patterns keep everything in line. It’s such a perfect introductory piece that vividly showcases what you might expect from the remainder of this EP. “Take Me Higher” arrives with more colossal riffs and chord progressions, drenched in generous servings of reverb effect. These guitar works create a calm, soothing, relaxing, ethereal ambiance yet there’s a particular rawness, abrasiveness, and grittiness lurking around thanks to fuzz distortion. Once again, the drummer accentuates and keeps the tempo by constantly kicking the bass drum while the vividly hearable addition of the tambourine adds more detail and complexity. Besides all those music genres mentioned before, you’ll notice how some of the finest elements borrowed from shoegaze and noise rock roar around, adding even more abrasiveness to the material. The title track exemplifies Night Collectors’ experimental side and willingness to break all the rules and shapeshift boundaries of their already established sound. It seems like guitars gradually become even more raw, complex, and colossal, thanks to all those repeatable themes, melodies, harmonies, and riffs.

Besides all those impressive works, it’s important to mention how big role basslines and percussions play in this sonic equation. “What Would I Do” showcases how profoundly heavy basslines lurk beneath all those luxuriant guitar layers, providing more than necessary heaviness, clarity, and depth while simultaneously binding all the instrumentations with the percussive sequences. These basslines are deep, dense, and heavy, contributing more power and detail to an already intricate structure. “heat & fury” is all about the ambiance. Night Collectors’ sole purpose is to create a nearly cathartic experience where pleasant soundscapes transport listeners to another realm. “Transmissions” exemplifies their intentions perfectly. Each instrumentation and segment is carefully written, composed, arranged, recorded, and produced, making this listening experience worth repeating over and over again. Each instrument has its place and purpose in this sonic equation, so if the guitars create a multilayered experience that serves as a perfect backdrop for all the vocals to shine upon, then the bass and percussions act as a backbone, holding everything together. Night Collectors thought about everything while assembling “heat & fury,” so this epic sonic voyage will unquestionably appeal to even the pickiest psych-rock fans.

Besides all the arrangements and instrumentations, the band also thought about the song structures. Each composition arrives with a perfect structure, garnered with multilayered, profoundly detailed segments, and brilliant ideas, distilled into incredible, otherwordly soundscapes. This level of dedication is rarely seen nowadays, especially on a psychedelic rock scene. “heat & fury” is a psych-rock masterpiece, a one-of-a-kind sonic experience worth revisiting every time you crave some cleverly assembled, expertly performed, multilayered music. The EP is available on Night Collector’s Bandcamp page. Don’t miss it!
