John Deering – Strip Mall Jesus

John Deering, an American singer-songwriter from Minneapolis, has released his debut single today. With the help of Ryan Smith of legendary Soul Asylum and drummer Peter Anderson of Run Westy Run, he crafted a perfect composition, garnered with modern production yet fully packed with nostalgia. “Strip Mall Jesus” immediately transports you into another realm. Sonically, this composition carries everything you dearly love about the early nineties music. Inspired by Seattle grunge bands like Pearl Jam, Nirvana, and Soundgarden, he creates music that will not only resonate with those who were part of the scene when this particular music genre ruled the airwaves but also those picky music enthusiasts looking for a cleverly assembled and flawlessly performed music. Besides the fundamental elements of alternative rock and grunge music, you may stumble upon some of the finest properties borrowed from garage rock, punk rock, indie rock, power pop, etc. John Deering and his friends use all these additional elements as more than necessary enhancements, accentuations, decorations, and other details to elevate their music to new heights while simultaneously remaining loyal to the primary sonic direction. Therefore, these experimentations with different approaches and complementary styles resulted in a catchy, memorable, engaging debut single, suitable for anyone into rock music.

From the onset, you’ll notice how the wild energy of this track immediately grabs you by the collar and refuses to let go long after the last notes and beats fade. “Strip Mall Jesus” is an energetic, dynamic, powerful composition that arrives with a perfect structure, profoundly detailed segments, brilliant ideas, and marvelous instrumentations. As soon as you press play, anthemic singalongs wrap around the listening apparatus, preparing the listener for what’s about to come up next. John Deering thought about vocal arrangements a lot, so you’ll notice how his soulful, passionate, sincere, confident, emotional, and powerful performance elevates everything to new heights, commands attention, and guides the listening apparatus from scratch to finish. His subtly raspy, high-pitched voice seamlessly balances low, mid, and high notes, emphasizing everything he intended to achieve with this song. Besides decorating all these segments and decorations, these vocal harmonies contribute more emotional depth and detail to an already intricate song structure. In the meantime, the excellent guitar works shape a perfect backdrop for all the vocals to shine upon. You’ll notice a comprehensive collection of chord progressions, riffs, harmonies, melodies, and themes lurking around and supporting John Deering’s vocal harmonies to the max. Together, they invite listeners to dive deeper into the song’s core. Whether delivered on acoustic or electric guitar, they bring a lot of detail to the table, making “Strip Mall Jesus” such a pleasant listening experience worth repeating over and over again.

This track wouldn’t sound this good without a rock-solid rhythm section. You’ll hear how remarkable, warm-sounding, audible basslines reverberate beneath the guitar layers, offering more than necessary heaviness, clarity, and depth while binding the mentioned instrumentations with drums. These low-ends are warm, deep, dense, and luxuriant, contributing more power and detail to this excellent track. In the meantime, the excellent drumming performance based upon expertly arranged, flawlessly performed, well-accentuated, dynamic beats, breaks, fills, and other percussive acrobatics keep everything in line while dictating groove and tempo. Each instrument has its place and purpose in this sonic equation, so if the guitars act as a perfect backdrop for all the vocals to shine upon then the bass and guitars serve as a backbone, holding everything together. John Deering thought about everything while writing, composing, arranging, and producing “Strip Mall Jesus,” resulting in a fascinating composition that will immediately become your favorite piece of sonic artistry in 2025. From impressive vocal performance and catchy guitar works to intricate basslines and dynamic performance, “Strip Mall Jesus” carries all the vital elements of nineties alternative, grunge, garage, punk rock, and indie rock music. It’s one of those songs that immediately gets under your skin, so head to your favorite streaming platform and play it loud.
