Ryan Tobin – Purgatory Road

Purgatory Road” is the latest release by Ryan Tobin, an outstanding singer-songwriter based in Canyon Lake, Texas. Heavily promoted by the title track, this full-length album carries twelve excellent songs that will immediately appeal to all those music enthusiasts looking for cleverly assembled and flawlessly performed music. Lyrically, “Purgatory Road” captures Tobin’s struggles with substance abuse, PTSD, and anxiety while also depicting his path to recovery through a series of triumphs. Soundwise, the artist combines a singer-songwriter approach with many different but complementary music genres. Perhaps alternative rock comes to mind, but you’ll unquestionably notice how some of the finest elements borrowed from hard rock, grunge, indie, and emo found their way into this fine piece of sonic artistry. He uses all these additional sonic ingredients as more than necessary enhancements, accentuations, decorations, and other details to uplift his music to new heights while simultaneously remaining loyal to the primary sonic direction. You’ll also notice how his music continuously levitates between the late nineties and early noughties rock while incorporating all the fundamentals of modern rock music. He poured heart and soul into this material, resulting in one of the finest alternative rock albums you’ll hear this year.

As soon as you press play, you’ll realize that Ryan Tobin is not joking around with his music. “Purgatory Road” is a profoundly detailed album where each composition arrives with a perfect structure garnered with many intricate segments, brilliant ideas, and marvelous orchestrations. Each vocal, sonic, and rhythmic maneuver has its place and purpose, making “Purgatory Road” such an enjoyable, mesmerizing, fascinating piece of sonic artistry worth repeating over and over again. Still, Ryan Tobin’s passionate, sincere, confident, emotive, and powerful vocal performance is the first thing you’ll notice here. His impressive vocal range seamlessly balances low, mid, and high notes, decorating everything he intended to achieve with his debut album. His voice commands attention and guides the listening apparatus with such precision and finesse, emphasizing all the segments and instrumentations from scratch to finish. These vocal harmonies contribute to the emotional depth and complexity of an already intricate material, proving that he thought about even the tiniest details and nuances while recording vocals for this material. In the meantime, the guitar works are solely responsible for such a hypnotic, irresistible, engaging atmosphere. The interplay between rhythm and lead guitars shapes a perfect backdrop for all the vocals to shine upon. You’ll hear how all those catchy, memorable, riffs, arpeggiated, and regular chord progressions delivered on electric and acoustic guitars resonate on one side while the other shines with cleverly constructed, beautiful mesmerizing themes, melodies, harmonies, leads, and other sonic delicacies. You’ll also notice subtle synth works on particular compositions, spicing things up and elevating segments or entire songs to new heights. These guitars and synths works flawlessly match all the vocal harmonies, making this material even more pleasing to the ears.

Of course, Ryan Tobin thought about the rhythm section. You’ll notice how all those equally impressive, intricate, audible, warm-sounding basslines rumble beneath all those guitar layers, providing heaviness, clarity, and depth while binding everything together with rhythmic patterns. These low-ends are warm, rich, dense, and heavy, and they immensely support those guitar riffs and chord progressions. In the meantime, the drumming performance keeps everything in line while dictating groove and tempo with tastefully assembled, flawlessly performed, well-accentuated, groovy beats, breaks, fills, and other percussive acrobatics. Ryan Tobin thought about everything while writing, composing, arranging, recording, and producing his debut album, so if the guitars serve as a perfect backdrop for all the vocals to shine upon, then the bass guitar and drums act as a backbone, holding the remainder of the instrumentations together. Ryan Tobin’s creativity, talent, skills, and ideas shine through each vocal, sonic, and rhythmic maneuver. His journey through thick and thin is vividly described in this collection of meaningful, emotive, sincere, powerful songs. “Purgatory Road,” “Never Be,” “Broken Spear,” “Voice 99,” “With Or Without,” “Running Away,” and “The Return” are unquestionable standout tracks where he tells his life story with such emotional and sincerity, but you should also pay equal attention to the remainder of the material, as this album shines with some of the finest lyrics and orchestrations you’ll hear in a while. Ryan Tobin has created an alternative rock masterpiece that seamlessly blends past and present, nineties nostalgia and modern rock sound, vulnerability, and power, creating a collection of beautiful songs that will immediately grab you by the collar and refuse to let go long after this album ends. You should immediately place this alternative rock gem on your radar because Ryan Tobin and his music deserve your utmost attention. “Purgatory Road” is available on all streaming platforms. Don’t miss it!
