Backstrom – Dark Clouds

Dark Clouds” is the latest release by Backstrom, an outstanding Swedish singer-songwriter based in Stockholm. It’s his second piece of work in 2024, serving as an adequate follow-up of “The Carousel,” a marvelous full-length album released earlier this year that you should also check out. Still, “Dark Clouds” carries many innovations in songwriting, composing, arranging, and producing, showcasing the boundless talent, creativity, and versatility of an already fascinating artist. Heavily promoted with “Daydreaming,” “You And Me,” “Dark Clouds,” and “From The Ashes,” four incredible singles, this material carries everything you ever needed from cleverly crafted and flawlessly performed music. Soundwise, Backstrom combines a singer-songwriter approach with some of the finest properties borrowed from Americana, alt-country, country, folk, indie folk, rock, and blues. It’s a comprehensive collection of styles that work to the advantage of Backstrom’s sound and defining elements that make his music irresistibly beautiful. However, he uses all these additional sonic ingredients as more than necessary enhancements, accentuations, decorations, and other details to uplift the collection of songs to new heights while remaining loyal to the primary sonic direction. Therefore, these experimentations with many different but complementary music genres resulted in a mesmerizing album that will immediately appeal to all music enthusiasts and beyond.

This epic sonic journey commences with “Dark Clouds,” a beautiful song demonstrating Backstrom’s dedication to the craft. Like the remainder of the material, this composition arrives with a perfect structure, garnered with many intricate segments, brilliant ideas, and marvelous orchestrations. From catchy, memorable, engaging chord progressions, and delicate piano accentuations to magnificent vocal harmonies, “Dark Clouds” is one of those songs that immediately draws you into Backstrom’s expansive sonic universe and prepares you for the remainder of this incredible material. The vocal arrangements are one of the standout features throughout the entire album and “One More Time” exemplifies how the artist thoroughly planned every vocal line, background vocals, and singalongs. His raspy voice complements every chord progression, violin themes, melodies, and leads with such precision and finesse, delivering a listening experience worth repeating over and over again. This impressive vocal range seamlessly balances low, mid, and high notes, emphasizing everything the artist tried to achieve with his music. It’s a creative genius on full display and you’ll solely enjoy it. The piano plays one of the significant roles in this otherworldy sonic journey, and “From The Ashes” exemplifies how stripped-down arrangements can sound equally effective. For this particular composition, Backstrom decided to use his voice and piano for the maximum impact, and he ultimately succeeded in his intentions. You’ll be immediately pulled into a whirlwind of exceptional leads, themes, melodies, harmonies, and other sonic delicacies, which in this case, serve as a perfect backdrop for Backstrom’s effective vocal performance to shine upon. Together, they create one of the finest ballads you’ll hear in a while. The simultaneous subtleness and complexity achieved through soulful vocal and piano performance prove he’s a highly skilled songwriter and composer who knows how to strike an emotional depth with just a few elements at his disposal. Still, you’ll also notice how the guitars join in, elevating this excellent song to an entirely new level, and this surprising element is such a nice addition that perfectly suits the arrangements.

This joyful journey continues with “Daydreaming,” a hypnotic, American-inspired composition that further displays Backstrom’s versatility, innovation, and uniqueness. Besides Americana, you’ll notice how some of the fundamental elements of complementary styles like alt-country, country, and folk music lurk around, decorating each segment with remarkable precision. It’s one of those tracks where guitars reign supreme. Therefore, you’ll be blown away by the interplay between reverby slide accentuations and tastefully arranged chord progression. These layers define all the themes, melodies, harmonies, and other sonic maneuvers, but also dictate the ethereal atmosphere of the song. “Like The Night” is a bluesy folk rock track where the artist introduces more instrumentations. For example, the groovy, punchy rhythm section dictates the groove and tempo while the subtly distorted riffs and mesmerizing keys act as a backdrop for Backstrom’s vocal acrobatics. Speaking of the vocals, “Like The Night” is also one of those tracks where his impressive voice shines in the limelight, elevating ambiance, defining melodic course, and spicing things up on an entirely new level at the same time. The calm, soothing, relaxing, ethereal vocal harmonies perfectly pair all the instrumentations, constructing a cathartic listening experience worth repeating over and over again. In the meantime, “You And Me” demonstrates how the acoustic guitar layers collide harmoniously with the exceptional harmonica performance. With the additional guitar leads and Americana-inspired sonic direction, it’s one of those tracks that showcases Backstrom’s ability to construct soulful music in every possible direction you could imagine at the moment. This epic sonic journey comes to an end with “Tennessee,” another excellent bluesy-inspired Americana composition where the guitar interplay brings only the finest elements of all the mentioned music genres. It’s a soulful number with incredible verses and choruses, which ultimately showcase Backstrom’s brilliance. It’s such a perfect closure of one of the finest albums you’ll experience this year.

Backstrom has created a masterpiece. “Dark Clouds” is a comprehensive collection built upon passionate, soulful, meaningful folk-rock compositions that immediately grab you by the collar and refuse to let you go long after this album ends. With his incredible vocal, sonic, and rhythmic maneuvers, he constructs an expansive sonic universe that defines his admiration towards so many music genres. It’s an Americana and country-inspired folk rock voyage that tickles all your senses and forces you to repeat these songs over and over again. Backstrom is a fascinating songwriter and musician whose ability to embed emotional depth and complexity over an already intricate song structure impresses on so many emotional levels. You should place “Dark Clouds” on your music radar immediately. The album is available on all streaming platforms. Don’t miss it!
