Califone Released New Single

Califone (USA), releases new single today on Jealous Butcher Records and embarks on their first full band tour of Europe & UK in 10 years. The band will perform in Italy, France, Spain, the UK and Ireland starting October 27 in Rome, Italy.

Supporting their 2023 release “Villagers” on Jealous Butcher Records, Califone brings their catalog of beautiful broken melodies and a seasoned band of collaborators to Europe this fall. To celebrate this momentous occasion Califone releases their new single “burn the sheets.bleach the books” today, October 17 2024.

“burn the sheets.bleach the books” is a song that has been kicking around Califone world for some years. Lyrically, it’s a Hieronymus Bosch painting that takes place in a LA tent city. Corners packed with humans and beasts screaming for divine (or any kind of) intervention. Despite not having it on their set list, the band consistently performs abstract, improvisational renditions of this song during shows. Sometimes as a reward for a good audience, sometimes as a test of patience to a fidgety audience.

With 25 years of Califone in his catalog (not to mention a variety of other projects, including alt rock heroes Red Red Meat), the Chicago-born, Los Angeles-based artist Tim Rutili knows well how to find that moment of awe and bliss even as things are falling apart. Part poet, part abstract painter, and always surrounded by a variety of hyper-talented collaborators (here including longtime cohorts Ben Massarella, Michael Krassner, Rachel Blumberg, and Brian Deck, as well as the likes of Nora O’Connor and Finom‘s Macie Stewart), Rutili has always excelled at luring listeners through elusive lyrics, flashes of shadows and images coming together in disarming unity.
