“Tension” is the latest track by Plastic Heart, an outstanding Manchester-based group. It’s their first piece of work in 2024, serving as an adequate follow-up of “Giver Of Starts,” another excellent single released last year that you should immediately check out. Still, their new song arrives with many innovations in songwriting, composing, arranging, and producing, demonstrating their creativity and skills to the max. Soundwise, the band combines a few different but complementary rock subgenres. Perhaps alternative rock comes to mind first, but you’ll notice some of the finest properties borrowed from indie, shoegaze, and post-rock. They use all these additional elements as more than necessary enhancements, accentuations, decorations, and other details to elevate their latest track to new heights while simultaneously remaining loyal to the primary sonic direction. You’ll also notice how they expertly levitate between modern and some retro-nostalgic sonic maneuvers, offering something for even the pickiest listeners. Therefore, these experimentations with many different but complementary styles resulted in a catchy, engaging, memorable composition that will unquestionably appeal to the broader auditorium.
With the initial notes and beats, you’ll realize that Plastic Heart is not joking around with their music. “Tension” immediately grabs you by the collar and refuses to let you even long after the song ends. The band thoroughly planned everything, so you’ll notice how this song arrives with a perfect structure, adorned with many detailed segments, marvelous ideas, and outstanding musicianship. As soon as you press play, you’ll hear how Naomi Schofield steals the show with her fascinating voice. Her vocal performance commands attention and guides the listening apparatus from beginning to end while emphasizing all the segments and instrumentations. The impressive vocal range seamlessly balances low, mid, and high notes, decorating everything the remainder of the band tried to achieve with this song while the passionate, sincere, confident harmonies contribute to the emotional depth and complexity of an already intricate song. In the meantime, the guitar interplay between rhythm and lead guitars shapes a captivating backdrop for all the vocal articulations to shine upon. You’ll notice how cleverly assembled, flawlessly performed, riffs, and arpeggiated and regular chord progressions shine on one side while the other delivers reverby themes, melodies, harmonies, accentuations, and other sonic maneuvers that enhance everything on an entirely new level. The combination of subtly distorted riffs and nearly clean leads creates a lush, divine, otherwordly atmosphere that keeps you focused on those instrumentations throughout the entire track.
Of course, this song would sound this good without the rock-solid rhyme section. You’ll hear how intricate, audible, warm-sounding basslines lurk beneath all those mesmerizing guitar works, providing more heftiness, clearness, and depth while binding everything together with drums. The excellent rhythmic patterns based upon tastefully arranged, flawlessly performed, well-accentuated, dynamic beats, breaks, fills, and other percussive acrobatics keep everything in line while dictating the groove and pace. As you can see, Plastic Heart thought about everything while assembling their track. If the guitars play a significant role in providing a perfect backdrop for the magnificent vocal harmonies then the rhythm section acts as an adequate backbone that holds everything together. With “Tension,” Plastic Heart positions itself as one of the best modern alternative rock bands on the scene. Their ideas, musicianship, skills, and talent shine through every vocal, sonic, and rhythmic maneuver, proving that even the longevous music genres like alternative rock still have so much to offer to the audience. It’s a perfect song with so many memorable moments where the entire band shines in the limelight, delivering a soothing, ethereal, otherwordly sound that will immediately grab your attention. You should put Plastic Heart on your music radar immediately. The single is available on all streaming platforms. Don’t miss it!
