“Barricade Are Overrun” is the latest released by Goddamn Wolves, an outstanding trio based in Raleigh, North Carolina. It’s their fourth piece of work in 2024, serving as an adequate follow-up of “Seven Days A Week,” “Nowhere b/w Feints,” “Older, Slower b/w Everything Real Is Free,” “Seven Days A Week b/w Ah, Maria;” and outstanding singles released earlier this year that you should immediately check out. However, “Barricade Are Overrun” showcases many innovations in songwriting, composing, arranging, and producing, making a giant step forward for the band that already nurtured an exceptional sound. Soundwise, Goddamn Wolves combine many complementary music genres to illustrate such rich and luxurious sonic imagery. Perhaps alternative rock comes to mind first, but you’ll notice how some of the finest properties borrowed from nineties rock, grunge, and indie rock found their way into this sonic equation. They use all these additional elements as more than necessary enhancements, accentuations, decorations, and other details to uplift their latest single to new heights while remaining loyal to the primary sonic direction. Therefore, “Barricades Are Overrun” will suit even the pickiest alternative rock music and beyond.
As soon you press play, you’ll notice how Goddamn Wolves thoroughly planned everything. “Barricades Are Overrun” arrives with a cleverly assembled structure, garnered with many intricate segments, delicate arrangements, brilliant ideas, and superb orchestrations. They poured heart and soul into it, making “Barricades Are Overrun” one of the best alternative rock songs this year. The song commences with a subtle overture that immediately transits into expertly arranged, semi-distorted chord progressions. These guitar works serve as a perfect backdrop for all the vocals to shine upon. Goddamn Wolves gradually shape such a mesmerizing ambiance with these chord progressions, but they also gradually transform into powerful, heavy, heavily distorted riffs during the catchy, memorable, engaging choruses. In the meantime, the marvelous vocal performance serves as a centerpiece, commanding the attention and guiding the listening apparatus from scratch to finish. You’ll also notice how the impressive vocal range seamlessly balances low, mid, and high notes with such precision and finesse, emphasizing all the segments and instrumentations. The additional back vocals and singalongs spice things up on an entirely new level, making this track such a pleasant listening experience worth repeating over again. It’s also nearly mindblowing how all the vocals and guitars match together harmoniously throughout the entire song.
Of course, “Barricades Are Overrun” wouldn’t sound this good without the rock-solid rhythm section. You’ll hear how equally complex, audible, warm-sounding basslines rumble beneath the guitar layers, offering more than necessary heaviness, clarity, and depth while binding all the orchestrations with drums. The exceptional drumming performance accentuates, keeps everything in line, and dictates groove and pace with tastefully arranged beats, breaks, fills, and other percussive acrobatics. The rhythm section unquestionably propels the remainder of the instrumentations to new heights while serving as the backbone. “Barricades Are Overrun” is such a perfect alternative rock song where all the vocal, sonic, and rhythmic maneuvers collide harmoniously. Goddamn Wolves thought about everything while writing, composing, arranging, and producing their latest song. It’s more than hearable they put heart and soul into it, as all the effort is hearable during each segment. Each vocal harmony, chord progression, guitar riff, intricate low-end, and rhythmic pattern are carefully implemented into this sonic fabric that resonates with such cathartic ambiance from beginning to end. From the initial notes and beats, you realize that these folks are not joking around, as their experience, knowledge, skills, and talent are on full display here. “Barricades Are Overrun” is a track that you should put on your radar as soon as possible if you’re a die-hard fan of cleverly composed and flawlessly performed alternative rock music.
