Max Blansjaar – False Comforts LP (Beanie Tapes)

False Comforts” is a debut full-length album by Max Blansjaar, an Oxford-based singer-songwriter whose music transcends genres and techniques. Consisting of ten excellent compositions, this material vividly showcases Bansjaar’s creativity, talent, knowledge, and experience, allowing the listener to take a deep dive into an expansive sonic universe built upon many sonic delicacies and surprises. Soundwise, perhaps alternative comes to mind first, but don’t be surprised if you stumble upon many different but complementary music genres, expertly blended to satisfy even the pickiest listeners. Some vital elements borrowed from indie rock, indie pop, alternative pop, dream pop, and various electronic music styles found their way into this sonic equation, ensuring that “False Comforts” sounds fresh, diverse, innovative, and unique. Of course, these additional elements serve as enhancements, accentuations, decorations, tiny details, and nuances that unquestionably uplift this album on a new level while the artist remains loyal to the primary sonic direction. Therefore, these experimentations with many different but complementary music genres resulted in a mesmerizing full-length album worth repeating over and over again.

As soon as you press play, you’ll notice how Max Blansjaar thought about everything while assembling this marvelous material. He thoroughly planned every vocal, sonic, and rhythmic maneuver, ensuring these songs penetrated your listening apparatus with ease. Each song arrives with a perfect structure, garnered with many intricate segments, brilliant ideas, and impressive orchestrations. Blansjaar nurtures a calm, soothing, relaxing, and ethereal ambiance throughout the entire album, with emphasis on melody, harmony, cohesion, and flow. You’ll notice how his impressive vocal performance serves as a centerpiece, commanding attention and guiding your ears from scratch to finish. The perfect balance between low, mid, and high notes in his voice emphasizes all the segments and instrumentations with such precision and finesse. In the meantime, the interplay between rhythm and lead guitar shapes a perfect backdrop for all the vocals to shine upon. The amount of clean, semi-distorted, and heavy distorted chord progressions resonates in each composition while the addition of pleasant themes, melodies, and harmonies gives more depth.

You’ll also notice how many synth and keyboard maneuvers contribute to the mood and ambiance of particular tracks. Max Blansjaar’s ideas shine brightly through these instrumentations, proving he’s one of the most creative alternative/indie artists on the contemporary music scene. Of course, this material wouldn’t be complete without the rock-solid rhythm section. The equally intricate, audible, warm-sounding basslines roar beneath all the mentioned orchestrations, offering more than necessary heaviness, clarity, and depth while binding guitars and synths with drums. In the meantime, the comprehensive collection of acoustic and electro beats, breaks, fills, and other percussive acrobatics keep the remainder of the orchestrations in line while directing groove and tempo. Each instrument plays a significant role in this sonic equation, showcasing that Blansjaar thought about even the tiniest details and nuances while writing, composing, arranging, recording, and producing this album. “False Comforts” immediately grabs attention with its irresistible, hypnotic, cathartic atmosphere. Blansjaar’s outstanding skills, talent, ideas, and musicianship pull you into an immersive sonic landscape where calm, soothing, relaxing, ethereal vocal, sonic, and rhythmic maneuvers reign supreme. It’s a marvelous debut album worth checking out! Head to Beanie Tapes for more information about ordering this gem on vinyl.
