Dark Tree Bark – Kameni Spavač LP (Geenger Records)

Kameni Spavač,” the debut album by the Croatian experimental rock band Dark Tree Bark, is a bold and captivating exploration into the realms of post-rock, krautrock, progressive rock, and beyond. This ambitious release features five profoundly complex compositions— “Sanjarenje,” “Vražji Prolaz,” “Mrkla Šuma,” “Bijela Soba,” and “Fjord”—each carrying a unique mood and ambiance while collectively forming a cohesive sonic voyage.

The album opens with “Sanjarenje,” an epic sonic journey through the vast universe built upon post-rock fundamentals. The track begins with atmospheric soundscapes, gradually layering instruments to create a dense, immersive experience. As the song progresses, it transforms into a progressive, math-rock-inspired odyssey. Intricate guitar riffs and complex time signatures come to the forefront, showcasing the band’s technical prowess. The orchestrations shine brightly, creating a luxurious soundscape that pulls the listener deeper into the album’s world. This track sets a high bar for the rest of the album, promising an adventurous and unpredictable ride.

Following the expansive opener, “Vražji Prolaz” delves deep into a krautrock atmosphere right after a powerful math rock/experimental rock overture. The track is characterized by its luxurious ambiance, created by vividly hearable, semi-distorted basslines and stable, propelling rhythmic patterns. Guitars and synths weave an otherworldly ambiance reminiscent of the best progressive rock bands. The interplay between the instruments is intricate and organic, creating an engaging and complex landscape. This song stands out for its ability to balance intensity with subtlety, making it a memorable part of the album.

“Mrkla Šuma” is a standout track that brings illuminating progressive rock influences to the forefront, with a clear nod to King Crimson. The song’s arpeggiated chord progressions create a psychedelic ambiance that seamlessly transitions into the instrumental and vocal complexities of prog-rock. The inclusion of eerie ethno and world music elements, along with a cinematic ambiance and jazzy, cacophonic saxophone virtuosities, makes this track exceptionally eclectic. It is a daring composition that showcases Dark Tree Bark’s willingness to experiment and push boundaries, offering a rich listening experience that rewards repeated listens.

Continuing in the progressive vein, “Bijela Soba” introduces a completely new world through its ambient art rock properties. The odd time signatures and arpeggiated chord progressions are present here as well, but the abstract lyrical themes add a touch of pleasant oddness that perfectly suits the band’s aesthetic. The song’s ambient qualities create a dreamy, almost surreal atmosphere that invites the listener to lose themselves in the music. It is a track that exemplifies the band’s ability to blend different genres and create something truly unique.

The album closes with “Fjord,” an exploration into jazzy, ambient, psychedelic, math, and progressive rock. This track is a perfect closure to the album, as it brings together all the elements that make “Kameni Spavač” such a magnificent prog-rock album. The calm, soothing, and relaxing atmosphere is underscored by intricate instrumentation that maintains the listener’s interest. This ethereal quality of the track makes it a fitting end to the album, leaving the listener with a sense of completion and satisfaction.

Dark Tree Bark has succeeded in delivering one of the most impressive debut efforts in recent years. Each composition offers a new listening experience, rich with layers and complexities that request for repeated listens. The band’s technical skill and creative vision are evident throughout the album, making it clear that these musicians have a wealth of experience and are not afraid to showcase it through their music. “Kameni Spavač” is available on vinyl and all streaming platforms, making it easily accessible for anyone eager to embark on this sonic journey. Don’t miss out on this extraordinary debut from Dark Tree Bark—it’s a must-listen for any fan of experimental and progressive rock. Head to Geenger Records for more information about ordering vinyl.
