Michele Ducci – Sive CD (Monotreme Records)

On June 7, Michele Ducci will unveil “SIVE,” a full-length album that exemplifies his artistic evolution and resilience. Known for his contributions to the electro-pop duo M+A and the innovative project Santii, Ducci has now crafted an album that strips back the complexities of his previous endeavors to reveal a raw, unfiltered essence. Recorded in the analog sanctity of L’amor Mio Non Muore studios in Forlì, Italy, “SIVE” is a heartfelt collection of songs centered around the piano and Ducci’s soulful vocals.

“SIVE” opens with ‘River,’ a poignant ballad that sets the tone for the album. The track begins with hushed vocals and gentle piano, embodying the quiet introspection that permeates the record. Ducci’s lyricism reflects a moment of contemplation and desire to retreat from the music world. This sentiment of flowing away from the pressures and expectations of the industry is a recurring theme throughout the album. The title ‘SIVE’ itself carries deep philosophical undertones. Inspired by Spinoza’s phrase “Deus Sive Natura” and conversations with Italian philosopher Rocco Ronchi, Ducci explains that he was drawn to the idea of transition and becoming. The term ‘sive’ means ‘that is,’ or ‘namely,’ signifying a moment of recognition and clarity, much like finding a face in a watercolor or a pattern in the clouds. This concept of sudden awareness and transformation is reflected in the album’s cover art, a collaborative watercolor piece by Ducci and his partner Letizia.

Musically, “SIVE” traverses a range of styles while maintaining a cohesive, intimate atmosphere. ‘Feelings,’ ‘Here You Are,’ and ‘Nonesome’ delve into dreamy singer-songwriter territory, their gentle melodies and reflective lyrics inviting listeners into Ducci’s inner world. In contrast, tracks like ‘You Lay the Path’ introduce a more upbeat indie-pop element, showcasing Ducci’s versatility. ‘Just Because’ stands out with its RnB influences, adding a layer of soulful groove to the album’s texture. Meanwhile, ‘Hic’ incorporates percussive beat poetry, a nod to Ducci’s experimental roots. Each track is carefully crafted to ensure that the piano and vocals remain at the forefront, reinforcing the album’s theme of simplicity and authenticity. Of course, there are tracks like “Secondfirstime” and “Hebrides,” which also showcase Ducci’s creativity, diversity, and musical palette.

One of the most compelling aspects of “SIVE” is its commitment to analog recording. In an age where digital perfection often overshadows raw talent, Ducci’s decision to forgo computer editing and embrace the imperfections of live performance is a bold and refreshing move. This approach not only enhances the organic feel of the album but also aligns with its philosophical underpinnings of authenticity and presence. “SIVE” is more than just a collection of songs; it is a deeply personal journey that invites listeners to reflect on their experiences of transition and self-discovery. Ducci’s soft, soulful vocals create an intimate connection, making each track feel like a private conversation. The album’s analog warmth and minimalistic arrangements allow the emotional weight of the lyrics to shine through, creating a profound and moving listening experience.

As Ducci returns to his roots, both geographically and musically, “SIVE” emerges as a thriving realization of a long-held dream. The album’s release on CD in a color-printed card wallet, as well as digitally, ensures that it can be enjoyed in both traditional and modern formats, appealing to a wide audience. In a world increasingly dominated by digital artifice, Michele Ducci’s “SIVE” is a reminder of the beauty that lies in simplicity and sincerity. It is an album that resonates with the quiet power of genuine emotion, offering a sanctuary of sound for those seeking solace in music. As Ducci continues to evolve as an artist, “SIVE” stands as a landmark achievement, a rock-solid example of the enduring power of heartfelt expression. Head to the Monotreme Records for more information about ordering.
