Les Big Byrd – Diamonds, Rhinestones, And Hard Rain LP (Chimp Limbs Recordings)

Swedish psych-rock stalwarts Les Big Byrd, hailing from the vibrant streets of Stockholm, have returned with a sonic opus that transcends the boundaries of the genre. Their latest full-length album, “Diamonds, Rhinestones, And Hard Rain,” is a mesmerizing exploration that embraces the fundamental elements of psych-rock, propelling them into a remarkable sonic universe. From the beginning, it’s evident that Les Big Byrd has carefully crafted each track to perfection, threading together a comprehensive collection of influences ranging from psych-rock to krautrock, alternative, indie, and cinematic ambient. These experimentations resulted in a familiar and refreshingly innovative sonic landscape.

The guitars are at the core of their sound, serving as the perfect backdrop for the album’s lush ambiance. Skillful players deliver so many catchy, addictive, hypnotic, irresistible orchestrations that will immediately grab your attention. You’ll notice how all these calm, soothing, relaxing, ethereal chord progressions, harmonies, melodies, themes, and leads intertwine together while the generous servings of raw, abrasive, fuzzy distortion spice things up and uplift everything on an entirely new level. But it’s not just the guitars that shine on this album. The keyboards play a significant role, adding even more depth with their leads, themes, melodies, and harmonies. The use of modular synths evokes a nostalgic sound reminiscent of the late sixties, seventies, and early eighties, further enhancing the retro aesthetic of the album. Of course, no psychedelic rock album would be complete without a solid rhythm section, and Les Big Byrd delivers in spades. You’ll notice how equally complex, vividly hearable, warm-sounding basslines offer more than necessary heaviness, clarity, and depth while the exceptional drumming performance dictates the groove and tempo with moderate, well-accentuated beats and percussive acrobatics. What sets “Diamonds, Rhinestones, And Hard Rain” apart is its ability to blend retro influences with modern sensibilities. Each track exemplifies their evolution, offering a rich and luxurious listening experience from scratch to finish.

While the entire album is a sonic marvel, standout tracks like “Mareld,” “Curved Light,” the title track, and “The Night Bus” demand your utmost attention. However, to fully appreciate the album’s brilliance, you must delve into its entirety, as each composition offers something unique and captivating. The album artwork is equally striking, housed in a high-quality cardboard sleeve adorned with magnificent full-color artwork that immediately captures the eye. It’s a treat for your eyes and ears, and you should consider purchasing it on vinyl to fully appreciate Les Big Byrd’s brilliance. “Diamonds, Rhinestones, And Hard Rain” is a must-have for any psych-rock fan. Les Big Byrd has once again proven themselves as masters of their craft, delivering a timeless and forward-thinking album that will quickly become one of your favorite albums of the year.
