Lisa Humber – The Devil’s Advocate

The Devil’s Advocate” is the latest single by Lisa Humber, a Toronto-based singer-songwriter. It’s her first single in 2024, written in collaboration with producer/guitarist Justin Abedin. It serves as an adequate follow-up to the standalone singles and a full-length album, “The Space Between,” all released in 2022. Soundwise, Lisa Humber combines a singer-songwriter approach with some of the finest properties borrowed from many different but complementary music genres. Perhaps alternative rock comes to mind first, but you’ll also notice all the vital elements of modern rock, indie rock, pop rock, etc. Lisa Humber uses all these additional elements as more than necessary enhancements, accentuations, decorations, and other details that further uplift her latest track on an entirely new level while she simultaneously remains loyal to the primary sonic direction.

As soon as you press play, you’ll immediately hear how her outstanding vocal performance acts as a centerpiece, emphasizing all the segments and instrumentations. The skillful balance between low, mid, and high notes decorates everything she tried to achieve with this song, but also guides and retains the listener’s attention from scratch to finish. Her collaboration with Justin Abedin is more than hearable throughout the entire composition. “The Devil’s Advocate” brings many innovations in songwriting, recording, arranging, and producing, so you’ll detect every vocal, sonic, and rhythmic maneuver with such ease. The guitars play a significant role in this fine piece of sonic artistry. You’ll notice how the semi-distorted chord progressions, regular and palm-muted riffs propel every section, while the lead guitar shines with many themes, melodies, and harmonies. This interplay acts as an adequate backdrop for Humber’s vocal performance. It’s nearly mindblowing how her voice and guitars match together.

“The Devil’s Advocate” wouldn’t sound complete without an outstanding rhythm section. The bass guitar rumbles right beneath the guitar layers, offering more than necessary heaviness, clarity, and depth. It’s also good to mention that these low-ends also bind the mentioned instrumentations and drums together. The excellent drumming performance dictates groove and pace with energetic, well-accentuated beats, breaks, and other percussive acrobatics while simultaneously keeping other orchestrations in line. Lisa Humber and Justin Abedin thought about everything, ensuring a tremendous listening experience with every note and beat delivered. Lyrically, “The Devil’s Advocate” is an introspective number about love, mistakes, and self-discovery. Lisa Humber sings about ignoring warning signs, playing games, and admitting responsibility for the caused chaos. It’s a song about being human and learning from the past. She perfectly described the situation we’ve all been through, so her latest single will resonate with the broader auditorium. “The Devil’s Advocate” deserves your utmost attention because Lisa Humber invested all her experience, knowledge, talent, and skills into this number. You’ll solely enjoy all the ideas, musicianship, and efforts incorporated while making this fine piece of sonic artistry. With her exceptional vocal and instrumental performance, Justin Abedin’s help, and relatable lyrics, “The Devil’s Advocate” will become your favorite modern rock love song. The single is available on all streaming platforms. Don’t miss it!
