Baits – All Filler, No Killer LP (Noise Appeal Records)

Baits‘ latest offering, “All Filler No Killer,” defies its name with a comprehensive collection of tracks that are nothing short of absolute hits. This second full-length album from the Austrian band showcases their evolution to a higher level of musical sophistication, weaving together garage rock, grunge, punk rock, pop punk, alternative, and indie elements into a cohesive and captivating sonic landscape. At the forefront of the album is Sonja Maier’s magnetic charisma. Her confident, sincere, and powerful voice takes center stage, effortlessly balancing low, mid, and high notes. From melodic passages to raw, abrasive, semi-aggressive shouts, Maier’s vocals inject each song with emotion and intensity, emphasizing every segment and instrumentation with aplomb.

The guitars play a significant role in shaping the album’s rich ambiance, courtesy of skillful guitar players. Clean, semi-distorted, and heavily distorted chord progressions and riffs create a lush sonic landscape, ranging from fuzzy to heavy depending on the song’s mood. Catchy leads, themes, and harmonies add complexity, drawing listeners deeper into Baits’ musical world and evoking a sense of both nostalgia and novelty. Not to be overshadowed, the rhythm section shines with equally complex basslines and dynamic drumming. Warm low-end notes provide the necessary heaviness and depth, binding guitars with drums and adding an extra layer of richness to the overall sound. The drumming performance dictates groove and tempo with precision and flair, driving each song forward with undeniable energy and momentum.

“All Filler No Killer” channels everything beloved about grunge, garage, punk rock, and alternative rock music while infusing it with a modern touch. While reminiscent of iconic bands like L7, The Breeders, Pixies, Babes In Toyland, and Hole, Baits bring their own unique flavor to the table, creating both familiar and innovative sound. Standout tracks like “Fucking Fake,” “Sleep With You,” “Hey Girl,” “Hello My Love,” “Playing God,” “Up In The Air,” “Let Go,” and “Take Me Out” exemplify the album’s hard-hitting energy and infectious melodies. From the anthemic choruses to the gritty verses, each song on the album demands attention, showcasing Baits’ musical prowess and songwriting ingenuity.

Released on black vinyl, “All Filler No Killer” is a gem not to be missed. Head to Noise Appeal Records for more information about ordering this gem and prepare to be captivated by Baits’ killer blend of nostalgia and modernity. With this album, Baits proves that they know exactly where they are headed – straight to the top of the underground scene. Is this possibly the best European grunge album of the year? Quite possibly!
