Luke Tangerine feat. Matthew Mirliani – California

Luke Tangerine returns with another outstanding composition, “California.” This prolific Frankfurt-based multi-instrumentalist, composer, and producer has teamed up with independent singer-songwriter, filmmaker, and actor Matthew Mirliani for a mesmerizing composition that will immediately appeal to all the dream pop fans and beyond. It’s a perfect follow-up to “Urban Echoes,” “I Adore You,” “Departure,” and “Safe;” extended play and standalone singles released this year. Luke Tangerine is known for his experimentations with many different but complementary music genres, and this time, he pays homage to the dream pop music scene. However, you’ll notice how some mainstays like synthwave, synth-pop, and electro-pop found their way into this sonic equation. Of course, Luke Tangerine also incorporated fundamentals of electronic music into this track, just like he did on previous tracks.

However, “California” differs from his previous works. Perhaps it leans toward his recognizable sound, but this prolific artist always finds ways to surprise his listeners. First of all, this dream-pop direction perfectly suits his songwriting, composing, and producing abilities. Tangerine knows a lot about music genres, and his experience and knowledge are vividly hearable. The instrumentations implemented into every segment act as more than rock-solid proof. You’ll hear how the synths reign supreme with all the calm, soothing, relaxing, ethereal themes, leads, melodies, harmonies, sequences, and ambiances involved. These orchestrations shine in every segment, serving as a perfect backdrop for Matthew Mirliani’s vocal performance. It’s nearly mindblowing how Mirliani fit into this sonic equation with his marvelous voice gliding over low, mid, and high notes with such ease. This symbiosis between Tangerine’s instrumentations and Mirliani’s vocal articulations works to the advantage of the song, building a colossal foundation that holds listeners’ attention.

The rhythm section sounds intricate, like the synths. Tangerine paid equal attention to the low-end, so you’ll notice how the synth basslines gives more richness and depth. In the meantime, tastefully assembled, moderate, detailed, well-accentuated rhythmic sequences direct the orchestrations while simultaneously dictating groove and tempo. The rhythm section holds everything together like glue, and you’ll notice how much synthwave, synth pop, and electronic music influences come right from these percussive structures. As usual, each instrumentation plays a significant role in shaping such a rich and luxurious ambiance. “California” sounds like it is supposed to sound. It’s a straightforward, danceable, dynamic, melodic summer hit decorated with so many brilliant ideas. Luke Tangerine proves once again that his experience and knowledge play an equal role just like his talent and skills. It’s one of those tracks you need to hear to comprehend the brilliance of the artist. Head to your favorite streaming platforms and give it a listen. You won’t be disappointed.
