The Darién Gap – Haunted Lots 12″ EP (Sell The Heart Records)

The Darién Gap’s debut full-length album, “Haunted Lots,” emerges as a masterpiece that threads together the best elements of melodic punk, orgcore, pop punk, and indie punk. Comprising Brian Moss and Mike Thompson, this duo has self-recorded an EP in a one-bedroom house in Los Osos, CA, delivering a sonic experience that transcends the boundaries of the punk rock genre. The album kicks off with a cascade of melodic riffs, courtesy of Moss, setting the tone for a journey through harmonious landscapes. The songs carry a hypnotic and ethereal ambiance, making it impossible not to get lost in the carefully crafted melodies. What sets The Darién Gap apart is their ability to infuse the contemporary melodic punk rock sound with a nod to the early 2000s, creating a nostalgic and refreshingly modern sonic blend.

The guitars take center stage, shining brightly in the mix with magnificent riffs, chord progressions, melodies, harmonies, and captivating leads. Moss’s expertise is evident as he effortlessly navigates through the sonic terrain, delivering moments that are both infectious and emotionally charged. The equally complex, vividly hearbale, warm-sounding, impressive basslines add necessary heaviness and depth while simultanously connecting the guitars and drums. Thompson’s drumming is a standout performance, driving the rhythm with energetic beats, well-accentuated breaks, and percussive acrobatics that dictate groove and tempo. The drumming not only propels the songs forward but also acts as a cohesive force, keeping the entire instrumentation in perfect harmony.

The vocals, handled by Moss and Thompson, steal the show with a remarkable blend of semi-distorted shouts and clean singing. The vocal performance expertly balances low, mid, and high notes, elevating each segment and instrumentation to new heights. It’s a refreshing take that adds another layer of complexity to an already rich sonic tapestry. “Haunted Lots” is a treasure trove of jaw-dropping moments, with standout tracks like “Looking,” “Albany Bowl,” and “The Shroud” showcasing The Darién Gap’s songwriting prowess. However, it’s important to note that every track on the album is a gem, with “Bad Comment” and “I Wish I Didn’t Wish” contributing their own unique charm.

The EP’s production exemplifies their dedication, with self-recording, engineering, and mixing taking place in a one-bedroom house. Jack Shirley’s masterful touch at the Atomic Garden in Oakland, CA, adds the final polish to this sonic gem. “Haunted Lots” is not just an album; it’s an experience that demands attention from start to finish. The Darién Gap has delivered a release that encapsulates their experience, knowledge, skills, and talent. It’s a treat for every true fans of modern melodic punk rock and beyond. Available on a single-sided 12″, you can pick this punk rock gem on white or blue vinyl variant via Sell The Heart Records. Head to their web store for more information about ordering.
