Karen Harding – Imaginary Boyfriend

Imaginary Boyfriend” is the latest song by Karen Harding, a Melbourne-based singer-songwriter. It’s her first single in 2024 that serves as a perfect follow-up to “Insane For A Moment” and “Devil In The Mirror,” two exceptional compositions released last year. Lyrically, “Imaginary Boyfriend” talks about the heart’s longing for ideal love and its persistent dream to maintain personal ideals and freedom. Soundwise, Karen Harding explores many different but complementary subgenres of pop music. Perhaps indie pop comes to find first, but her music also shines with some of the finest sonic ingredients borrowed from synth-pop, modern pop, and commercial pop. Of course, don’t be surprised if you stumble upon some other genres, because Karen Harding incorporated so many details and nuances into her song. She uses all these additional elements as more than necessary enhancements, accentuations, decorations, and other details that undoubtedly uplift this track on an entirely new level, while she simultaneously remains loyal to the primary sonic direction. Therefore, these experimentations with different but complementary styles resulted in a mesmerizing composition that will appeal to even the pickiest indie pop fans and beyond.

Right with the initial notes and beats, you’ll notice Harding‘s exceptional vocal shining as a centerpiece and emphasizing everything she tried to achieve with this song. These vocal harmonies perfectly balance between low, mid, and high notes, decorating all the segments and instrumentations with such ease. She also included several layers of synth leads, themes, melodies, harmonies, sequences, and ambiances, serving as adequate support for her vocal performance. These synth layers also add a touch of complexity, making it even more appealing to the listening apparatus. The guitars lurk right beneath the synths with reverby, semi-distorted, nearly funky chord progressions, offering a calm, soothing, relaxing, nearly ethereal performance. Of course, Karen Harding also thought about the low-ends, so you’ll hear how the thick layer of equally complex, vividly hearable, warm-sounding basslines gives more heaviness, clarity, and depth, but also serves as a binding element between synth, guitars, and drums. The outstanding drumming performance is based upon energetic, well-accentuated, tastefully arranged beats, breaks, fills, and other percussive acrobatics that dictate groove and tempo, but also keep the remainder of the orchestrations in line. Everything sounds top-notch from scratch to finish, proving Karen Harding paid a lot of attention while writing, composing, arranging, recording, and producing her new song.

“Imaginary Boyfriend” shines with all the finest indie pop qualities, but this track will appeal to anyone in any subgenre of pop music. Karen Harding invested many brilliant ideas into it, and her effort paid in a lyrically and sonically perfect composition that will immediately become a staple on your playlist. The single is available on all streaming platforms. Don’t miss it.
