Barking Poets – Southsea Sounds CD EP (Engineer Records)

Barking Poets, the London-based punk rock trio, makes an emphatic statement with their latest extended play release, “Southsea Sounds.” This six-track EP is a sonic journey that seamlessly blends contemporary American melodic punk rock with properties of raw British punk rock. From catchy hooks to hypnotic anthems, Barking Poets have crafted one of the standout punk rock releases of the year, showcasing their musical prowess and attention to detail. The EP kicks off with a burst of energy in “Getting Away With It,” where the guitars fire off three to four-chord progressions, riffs, melodies, harmonies, themes, and leads. The continuous guitar work sets the tone for the entire EP, providing a relentless stream of musical dynamism. The warm, vividly hearable basslines contribute the necessary heaviness, depth, and clarity, acting as the backbone alongside drumming performance.

The exceptional drumming performance on “Southsea Sounds” is a standout element, featuring energetic, well-accentuated beats, breaks, fills, and percussive acrobatics. The drumming not only dictates groove and pace but also ensures the cohesion of the entire band. Each beat and fill is carefully crafted, adding a layer of precision to the overall sound. Vocal harmonies serve as a centerpiece, uplifting all instrumentations to an entirely new level. The exceptional vocal delivery on tracks like “We Will Overcome,” “Part Of The Problem,” and “Going Back To London Town” adds a distinctive layer to Barking Poets’ sound. The anthemic quality of the vocal harmonies enhances the overall impact, making each track anthemic and memorable.

Barking Poets delve into socio-political themes, addressing issues like austerity, racism, climate change, self-belief, and populist politics. The thematic depth, combined with the infectious hooks, transforms “Southsea Sounds” into more than just a musical endeavor; it becomes a platform for meaningful discourse within the punk rock ethos. The EP’s highlights include “Getting Away With It,” a spirited opener, along with the anthemic “We Will Overcome,” the politically charged “Part Of The Problem,” and the reflective “Going Back To London Town.” However, it’s important to note that remainder of the EP also contributes to the cohesive and divine sound that defines “Southsea Sounds” from start to finish.

“Southsea Sounds” exemplifies Barking Poets’ evolution as a band. The EP not only pays homage to punk rock’s roots but also propels the band forward as a force to be reckoned with. Their latest offering is a must-listen for anyone even remotely into politically charged melodic punk rock sound. Head to Engineer Records for more information about ordering “Southsea Sounds” on CD.
