Rhein - Beter

Nijmegen-based indie trio Rhein returns with another exceptional composition. “Beter” is their fourth standalone single, but also the first one released in 2024. It’s an appropriate follow-up to “Moe,” “Allemaal Alleen,” and “Open Dak,” three outstanding singles released last year. Soundwise, Rhein dives even deeper into indie aesthetics by embracing the sole fundamentals of the genre. They managed to break the rules and shapeshift the boundaries of this longevous musical form by introducing some non-characteristic sonic maneuvers and unique ideas. Still, you’ll notice how other music genres found their way into this sonic equation. Don’t be surprised if you stumble upon some of the finest properties of dream pop, indie pop, alternative, and pop rock. You’ll notice how their latest single combines different eras, such as the late eighties, nineties, and modern indie music, while simultaneously offering a one-of-a-kind listening experience.

You’ll also hear how the shoegaze and dream pop elements affected their primary sonic direction. Although Rhein precisely explores indie aesthetics, there are many sonic delicacies decorated with reverb, echo, and delay effects. These experimentations work to the advantage of the song, making “Beter” even more calm, soothing, relaxing, ethereal, and easy-listening. The guitars play a significant role with so many arpeggiated and regular chord progressions, melodies, harmonies, themes, and leads included during every segment. These instrumentations serve as an adequate backdrop for a whispery vocal performance, which guides the listener throughout the entire dreamy sonic experience. It’s good to mention that the equally intricate, vividly hearable, warm-sounding basslines support guitars all the way by delivering more heaviness, clarity, and depth to the mix. Of course, this composition wouldn’t sound this good without well-accentuated rhythmic sequences, which dictate the pace and keep in control of everything the remainder of the band plays. The band works like a singular mechanism, ready to supply the listener’s ears with tremendous orchestrations.

It’s more than obvious Rhein are not joking around with their sound. These folks always bring impressive ideas to the table, empowered with the finest vocal, sonic, and rhythmic performance. Their ability to revitalize the indie genre by experimenting with the elements borrowed from other styles proves their boundless experience, creativity, and talent. “Beter” continuously levitates between calm melodies and danceable beats, making it such an enjoyable listening experience. You should check out Rhein and their latest single as soon as possible because it’s already a contender for one of the best indie songs this year. The song is available on all streaming services. Don’t miss it!
