Dream Of A Man In A Top Hat – The Bad Side

The Bad Side” is a new single by Dream Of A Man In A Top Hat, a prolific Massachusets post-punk duo. It is an adequate follow-up to their previous works, such as Like A Fire Engine, Eustace, Truthsenser, and Worry, standalone singles and extended plays released earlier this year. For those who missed my review about Like A Fire Engine, Dream Of A Man In A Top Hat loves to experiment with many complementary music genres to illustrate such rich and luxurious sonic imagery. Perhaps post-punk comes to mind first, but their music always resonates with some of the finest properties borrowed from alternative rock, neo-psychedelic, garage rock, punk rock, and indie rock. Of course, these additional elements serve as more than necessary enhancements, accentuations, decorations, and other details that uplift this track on an entirely new level, while Dream Of A Man In A Top Hat remains loyal to the primary sonic direction. Therefore, this magnificent number will unquestionably appeal to all the fans of the genre and beyond.

This song resonates with a characteristic ambiance that undoubtedly includes all the vital elements of post-punk music. However, the duo fully stacked every segment of this number with cleverly assembled ideas and instrumentations that make it even more complex. “The Bad Side” shines with excellent, wisely arranged, heavily distorted chord progressions and riffs that serve as a perfect backdrop for a confident vocal performance, while the equally complex, vividly hearable, warm-sounding basslines provide heaviness, clarity, and depth. The bass guitar also acts as a binding element between guitars and exceptional drumming performance based upon well-accentuated beats, breaks, fills, and other percussive acrobatics. These rhythmic sequences offer groove and pace but also keep the remainder of the instrumentations in line. That characteristic disco rhythm at particular moments invites you to stand up and dance.

Dream Of A Man In A Top Hat thoroughly planned the song structure. You’ll notice how even the tiniest details and subtle instrumentations have their place in this fine piece of sonic artistry. The song becomes even more progressive with every new segment, delivering a pleasant listening experience for the listener. The raw, abrasive, fuzzy guitars perfectly match warm low-end notes, while the outstanding drumming directs the pace. Also, it’s good to mention that the lead and back vocals emphasize every orchestration included along the way. Dream Of A Man In A Top Hat surprise with every number, so that’s the case with “The Bad Side” as well. Their upgraded version of post-punk sound resonates with modern and retro maneuvers, revitalizing and uplifting this genre on a new level. You should put “The Bad Side” on your radar as soon as possible. The single is available on all streaming platforms.
