Rhein – Moe

Moe” is a recently released single by Rhein, a Nijmegen-based indie trio. It is their third standalone single, serving as a perfect follow-up to “Open dak” and “Allemaal alleen,” two exceptional singles released earlier this year. Still, “Moe” carries many innovations in songwriting, composing, recording, and producing. Perhaps Rhein explores the fundamentals of modern indie music, but their music reveals more than that. You’ll notice how some other complementary music genres found their way into this fine piece of sonic artistry. Maybe shoegaze, alternative rock, synth rock, psych-rock, psych-pop, and indie pop come to mind first but don’t be surprised if you stumble upon some other styles. These experimentations resulted in a mesmerizing indie composition where all these elements serve as more than necessary enhancements, accentuations, decorations, and other details while the trio remains loyal to their primary sonic direction.

As soon as you press play, you’ll notice how “Moe” differs from their preceding works. It’s much calmer, soothing, relaxing, and ethereal compared to “Open dak” and “Allemaal alleen.” Rhein took a new approach to songwriting and composing, so their improved sound reveals more psychedelic rock and shoegaze elements. These experimentations work to their advantage, so maybe they sounded good before, but now they sound even better. Rhein fully stacked their latest track with many brilliant ideas. You’ll hear how cleverly arranged, vividly hearable, warm-sounding basslines stick like glue to the robust, heavy, moderate, well-accentuated beats, breaks, fills, and other percussive acrobatics while the slightly reverby leads are decorating and shaping such rich and luxurious ambiance. They gradually shape the magnificent soundscape that serves as a perfect backdrop for an outstanding vocal performance.

The song also gradually becomes even more complex, with more guitar themes, leads, melodies, chord progressions, and riffs involved. The low-end notes punch from the below, and the drumming becomes even more detailed. Also, it’s good to mention these profoundly creative musicians also included many synth maneuvers along the way, which unquestionably enhance the complexity of this song. “Moe” transits into more progressive and psychedelic rock experimentations as it comes to an end, and don’t be surprised if you hear some similarities with krautrock music. You’ll be surprised how Rhein thought about every detail while assembling this song. They put so many details at the particular moments for more than a good reason. Their ability to push boundaries and shapeshift the rules of indie sound goes beyond comprehension so many times throughout the song. You should put “Moe” on your radar if you’re looking for flawlessly executed indie rock music. The single is available on all streaming platforms.
