We’re back with more fine records from Noise Appeal. This time, I will talk about Expensive Mouse, the second full-length album by Baguette, released in 2018. It’s an excellent material carrying eight wisely constructed, powerful, energetic compositions you should check out as soon as possible. The band combines several complementary music genres to depict a rich and luxurious atmosphere. Perhaps noise rock comes to mind first, but more sonic ingredients are lurking around, such as many elements borrowed from post-hardcore, post-punk, garage rock, and alternative. It’s also good to mention that Baguette consists of only two members, but their sound goes beyond comprehension many times throughout the entire material.
Still, Baguette’s version of noise rock is surprising and exciting at the same time. They’re not one of those predictable bands who strike with enormous, chaotic, fuzzy, high-pitched chord progressions and heavy, tight riffs, maniacal vocals, and odd-time signature rhythmic sequences. Of course, all these qualities are present here, but Baguette elevated and revitalized the genre with their perfect balance between melody and aggression. These folks understand the importance of balancing crucial ingredients of the genre with some innovative approaches that may seem odd to those picky gatekeepers but will unquestionably appeal to many listeners outside this genre.
First and foremost, Baguette removed the majority of chaotic parts that decorate many preceding noise rock recordings. While this quality is still present in particular moments, the band cleverly implemented them in only necessary places. The band solely relies upon heavy riffs and chord progressions, that might sound even sludgy at particular moments. Still, this band shines the brightest during their progressive, nearly math-core or math rock themes, leads, melodies, harmonies, and other sonic maneuvers. They surely go progressive as much as possible, and they’re doing it pretty damn well. Baguette obviously know how to assemble ridiculously impressive sections where every instrumentation bursts with tremendous technicality, precision, and power.
Besides exceptionally constructed guitar works, the rhythm section plays a significant role too. You’ll notice how equally complex basslines follow every detail delivered on guitars, while the intricate rhythm section dictates groove and pace through hectic beats, breaks, fills, and other rhythmic acrobatics. The lead and back vocals sound astounding from scratch to finish, and they surely keep you engaged on this sonic journey alongside superb instrumentation. It’s crystal clear that Baguette thoroughly planned even the tiniest details, and their collective effort resulted in an outstanding noise rock album that will certainly appeal to those who appreciate innovation, precision, brilliant ideas, and exceptional musicianship.
“Expensive Mouse” comes on red vinyl housed in a high-quality jacket decorated with monochrome abstract artwork. It perfectly suits the excellence of the group, and you surely don’t want to miss out on the opportunity to grab this fine piece of plastic.
