Canning – Shortline

After two critically acclaimed full-length albums like Disjunted and Astatic, Chicago-based trio Canning released a handful of compositions such as Mr. Clown, Could We, Shortline, For You, and Collide. I will talk about the Shortline today. It’s the single that Canning released in 2022, and it serves as an appropriate continuation of their previous works. However, Shortline carries many innovations in songwriting, composing, and sound production. Perhaps the band almost solely relied upon fundamentals of indie on their previous works, but Shortline showcases other complementary music genres that continuously lurk throughout the entire song. You’ll notice some of the finest properties of classic rock, progressive rock, alternative rock, blues, rhythm and blues, but don’t be surprised if you stumble upon other styles along the way.

All these sonic ingredients shape a luxurious ambiance that almost dominantly leans toward that blues rock side. However, you’ll also notice many progressive rock segments where these experienced musicians showcase all their experience, talent, and jaw-dropping musicianship. The guitar bursts with detailed chord progressions, energetic riffs, melodies, guitar scales, virtuosities, and other sonic delicacies that will immediately blow you away. You’ll also notice equally complex basslines lurking alongside the guitars, and Shortline wouldn’t sound so massive without all these low-end tones. The drummer is solely responsible for all the dynamics of this composition. There’s no way you’ll miss all the perfectly accentuated rhythmic sequences decorated with many breaks, fills, and other percussive enhancements that define only the best rock songs. The lead vocalist will guide you on this epic sonic voyage with many high-pitched screams and shouts but also with many clean vocal segments. His outstanding vocal harmonies are improving the listening experience even more. I adore how Shortline resembles something hard rock, progressive rock, or any other similar bands would eventually record during the eighties. However, this track still carries a decent dosage of contemporary music, so it will appeal to your listening apparatus no matter which era you prefer. Check out this song if you’re into progressive indie rock sound. The single is available on all streaming platforms.
