The Canarys – Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid

The Canarys are a powerful duo emanating from New Orleans that took an interesting route while recording the debut album. These individuals decided to write a conceptual album about human connections, but the circumstances allowed these musicians to spend only a day in the studio before New Orleans shut down for Covid. Therefore, The Canarys needed to rethink the entire recording process in order to make things working smoothly, so they went with the safest route for themselves and decided to do things by following the principles of the DIY ethos. With drum track recorded within the day spent in the studio, The Canarys decided to record, produce and mix the entire material on their own. These experimentations resulted in their debut material called Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid, which I would like to talk about a bit more today.

Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid carries eleven marvelous compositions that are resonating in a specific manner. The Canarys heavily promoted this material over social media with series of singles, such as Gemini, Gigantic, Easy Money, and Open Up. The experience of the involved musicians kicks right with the initial beats of this recording. As soon as you decide to spin these tunes, you’ll realize you’re dealing with experienced musicians who spent quite an amount of time listening and performing music. Their knowledge and understanding of music span over so many genres, so you’ll have a hard time encapsulating all of them in one listening. Without any doubt, their love for pure hard rock is unquestionably hearable throughout the entire album, but just like it is usually the case with the albums like these, there’s more than meets the eye.

Besides the sheer dominance of hard rock music, you may hear a specter of complementary genres such as rock and roll, alternative rock, indie rock, southern rock, stoner, and grunge. This duo continuously levitates between all these ingredients, so their music span over late sixties rock and roll, mid-seventies hard rock, early nineties grunge, late nineties alternative rock, and contemporary indie rock sound. Still, you may hear generous servings of dirtiness that vividly resemble the sound of renowned groups such as Queens Of The Stone Age, Jack White, The Jet, The Strokes, Wolfmother, Arctic Monkeys, and other similar groups who blended alternative rock with abrasive aesthetics. You may also stumble upon some indie pop and soul moments during this material, but these are some minor additions that are unquestionably decorating Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid.

The subtle dirtiness enclosed within their brilliant guitar riffs, melodies, harmonies, and solos appear like they came from another planet. These layers of fuzziness are giving that grungy vibe to The Canarys, but they’re not entirely a grunge band because these guys are investing equal amounts of each genre in their music. The drumming segments are equally impressive as guitar maneuvers. However, it seems like the beauty of Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid lays deep down in the aesthetics that are certainly uplifting the listening experience. If you’re looking for a best indie rock album of a year, we have a top contender for that title right here. Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid is available at streaming services such as Spotify, Bandcamp, and YouTube.
