Tigers In Cairo Release New Song And Video “Just My Luck”

Tigers in Cairo is making waves in the San Diego scene with its muscular and melodic post-punk sound. Fresh off a “Best New Artist” win at the 35th Annual San Diego Music Awards, the five-man band returns with “Just My Luck,” their first new single of the year. With music written by guitarist Gavin Rhodes and lyrics by lead vocalist David Martin, “Just My Luck” is a touching and introspective love song about changing things for the better within yourself to be the best you can be for the one that you love.

The song begins with a crisp upbeat drum intro and snaking guitar line, eschewing distortion in favor of a propulsive, danceable groove. The band’s signature wall of sound re-emerges during the anthemic chorus. The song’s second half presents a thunderous, yet melancholic crescendo, as drummer Matt Yansch takes the reins with a building snare attack, before the chorus returns, ending with a cheerfully sustained organ note. 

“This song is probably the closest thing to a love song I’ve ever written,” explains Tigers in Cairo’s David Martin. “The whole idea is that you meet someone, you fall for each other fast, and at first you’re kind of presenting the best version of yourself. But eventually you realize, ‘Oh… I’ve got some demons and imperfections I’ve needed to confront,’ and I actually have to grow into the person I pretended to be at the beginning. It is inspired by real-life events that I reference in the lyrics.

My fiancée and I took this trip together to Vegas when we first started dating, and it was one of those moments where everything just felt right. Then fast‑forward to our last trip, Tigers played a Furnace Fest pre‑show, and the next day I proposed at the pond stage at the festival when the stage was empty. Both of those trips were very important for us, and I’m really glad I got to wrap all of that into ‘Just My Luck.’”

The song arrives with an inventive music video, as the band performs in mod-style suit-and-tie outfits at an old-fashioned nightclub in front of a dispassionate, glasses-clad crowd. As the band performs, Martin takes matters into his own hands, removing the glasses from each audience member and inspiring them to let loose on the dancefloor. The video was directed by Jeremy Sazon and Faerie Gonzalez.

Since forming in 2024, Tigers In Cairo have become one of San Diego’s most exciting new rock bands. In 2024 and 2025, they released four singles, each one offering a different shade of the group’s intensely heavy but melodic sound. Earlier this year, Tigers In Cairo recruited Tobias Grave, frontman of Chicago post-punk outfit Soft Kill, to deliver the atmospheric “In Our Fields.” Last year, the group made a strong first impression with their debut single, “Always Adored,” and follow-up “Wavy Eyes.”

All three of the first singles are now available on a limited edition 7”. Over the summer, TIC followed that early troika with the soaring “My Saving Face.” In early October 2025, Tigers In Cairo rocked the stage at Furnace Fest in Birmingham, AL. They closed the year with “As Told By,” a double-single featuring covers of songs by Jawbreaker and Mission of Burma.

With a band name inspired by the Cure’s “Fire In Cairo” and aspiring to embody the ferocity of an apex predator, Tigers In Cairo combines earworm riffs and progressions with a sharp sense of arrangement into a sound that evokes the ethos of 90’s alt groups like Jawbreaker with the melodic intensity of modern groups like Militarie Gun and the detail-rich soundscapes of bands like The Cure.
