Stone Sea – Left to Be

Stone Sea is back with another fine piece of sonic artistry that will unquestionably appeal to anyone who appreciates heartfelt music performed with such precision and finesse. It’s needless to say how this band delights us with their soulful, passionate, hearty music, and “Left to Be” is no exception either. Reflecting a quiet, yet strange season where thought loops, escapism, and self-reflection intertwine, this marvelous composition does even more than that; it tackles various sentiments and moods, leaving a perfect soundscape for contemplation. It’s a deeply resonant song where your listening apparatus soaks up all those beautiful vocal harmonies, impressive guitar works, intricate basslines, and exceptional rhythmic patterns. Heavily inspired by grunge and alternative rock movements of the nineties, “Left to Be” immediately transports you into a completely different era, times when those mentioned styles ruled the airwaves, yet it carries more than enough modern instrumentation, arrangements, and high-quality production, all necessary elements and tools that define the finest songs. While remaining deeply rooted in a rich rock tradition, Stone Sea brings all those sonic ingredients that defined some of the finest grunge and alternative songs, but do not be surprised if you stumble upon fundamental elements of stoner, sludge, garage, psych rock, and maybe even more along the way. With a sonic palette like this, these folks deliver one of the finest rock tracks of this year, proving that this longstanding genre still has so much to offer.

“Left to Be” is a fine piece of sonic artistry that tackles all the senses. It serves as a teleportation machine that allows you to return to a time when ripped jeans and plaid shirts were in style. Still, Stone Sea are profoundly creative band that shares their comprehensive collection of brilliant ideas and finest orchestratons. Although this song seems rooted in tradition, the ideas are still fresh, unique, and exciting, bringing a reimagined nineties sound wrapped in Stone Sea’s signature sonic maneuvers. Just wait until you hear those majestic guitar works; you’ll immediately jump up from your seat and headbang. Like in their previous works, the guitars offers catchy, heavy, powerful riffs and chord progressions, which shape a backdrop for all the vocals to shine upon while painting a luxuriant atmosphere. Although heavily drenched in generous servings of distortion for some extra rawness, abrasiveness, and aggression, these riffs and chord progressions are still as melodic as a grunge track should be. During the calmer moments, you’ll notice some clean, polished, neatly crafted arpeggiated chord progressions, and then the band returns to those heavier segments accompanied by mindblowing solos. The entire guitar performance is a piece of art in its own right, making this composition so luxurious. Above these instrumentations, the vocals act as a centerpiece, adding another layer of melody and harmony, emphasizing everything to new heights, commanding attention, and serving as a guide on this epic sonic voyage. Each vocal harmony arrives as a more than necessary decoration, improving the listening experience to the max. Besides the exceptional lead vocalist, you’ll notice how the additional guitar layers and back vocals make this song even more lush, with all those harmonies lurking all around. Stone Sea pays so much attention to everything, and both vocals and guitars perfectly pair in this sonic equation.

The rock-solid rhythm section has always been an important part of this band, so that’s the case here as well. The way those punchy, heavy, powerful, warm, intricate, vividly hearable basslines pair with guitars goes beyond comprehension so many times throughout the entire track. Those low-end notes rumble and punch from beneath, offering heftiness, clearness, and deepness while acting as a glue between guitars and drums. The exceptional drumming accentuates, emphasizes, and animates the soundscapes provided by all those mentioned instrumentations. You’ll hear how cleverly crafted, flawlessly performed, well-accentuated beats, breaks, fills, and other percussive acrobatics keep everything in line while dictating groove and depth. The drums go way beyond keeping time here; they’re a vital ingredient, bringing detail and complexity to this marvelous song. No one can deliver a nineties-inspired grunge and alternative rock track like Stone Sea. From the initial notes and beats, it becomes clear these folks are experienced musicians whose songwriting and composing abilities are hearable in every element, detail, accentuation, layer, and nuance. “Left to Be” brings together everything you dearly love about the nineties grunge rock, and there’s no better band than Stone Sea to translate that luxuriant, profound, fascinating sound.
