Deflecting Ghosts – Broken

“Broken” is the latest release by Deflecting Ghosts, an outstanding American trio based in Hutchinson, Kansas. Arriving after “Lost My Mind” and “Passion Of The Scorned,” two excellent compositions released last year, “Broken” represents the third track in a row and their first piece of work in 2025 that will immediately resonate with anyone who appreciates expertly assembled, flawlessly performed, and perfectly recorded music. Lyrically, the track explores the turning point between denial and self-confrontation. The band covers various sentiments, moods, situations, and circumstances, making “Broken” a highly relatable composition that will immediately resonate with the broader auditorium. Sonically, Deflecting Ghosts combines several complementary music genres to illustrate such rich and luxuriant sonic imagery. Perhaps alternative rock comes to mind, but the band also incorporates some of the finest properties borrowed from modern rock, modern metal, and melodic metal. They use all these additional sonic ingredients as more than necessary enhancements to improve or elevate particular segments to new heights while simultaneously remaining loyal to the primary sonic direction. While the band dominantly shines with qualities that meet all the trends of modern music production, you’ll also notice how they incorporate subtle touches of nostalgia here and there. There are some resemblances with the late nineties and early noughties music lurking around, spicing things up and making “Broken” even more appealing to the ears. Therefore, these experimentations with different approaches and complementary styles resulted in a catchy, memorable, engaging alternative rock track that will not only appeal to longtime fans but all those music enthusiasts looking for high-quality music performed with heart and soul.

Deflecting Ghosts poured heart and soul into their latest piece of sonic artistry. “Broken” commences with beautiful, jangly, angular, detailed chord progressions, serving as a perfect backdrop for all the vocals to shine upon. These guitar lines are perfectly recorded. Each tone is vividly hearable in the mix. Beneath all these guitar works, equally impressive and vividly hearable basslines offer warmness while moderate rhythmic patterns keep the remainder of the instrumentations in line. The vocals resonate with sincere emotion during these moments, navigating various sentiments with perfectly sung harmonies. Deflecting Ghosts gradually shapes the ambiance and prepares the listener for what’s about the come up next. After these calm, soothing, relaxing, ethereal introductory segments, the band bursts with tremendous groove, dynamics, and aggression while the vocals retain the harmony and melody showcased in the beginning. The soulful, passionate, confident, honest, emotive, powerful vocal performance elevates everything to new heights, commands attention, and guides the listening apparatus from scratch to finish. These vocal maneuvers might be profoundly melodic but there’s a subtly rawness, abrasiveness, and grittines lurking around. This singing technique perfectly fits the ambiance, as these harmonies seamlessly balance low, mid, and high notes with such precision and finesse, emphasizing everything Deflecting Ghosts intended to achieve with the track. In the meantime, the guitars craft a colossal slab of harmonious noise, capable of tearing everything down in a broader radius. The interplay between guitars delivers those tight, heavily distorted riffs on one side while the other shines with beautiful themes, melodies, harmonies, and other sonic maneuvers. Also, it’s nearly mindblowing how all these guitars pair with vocals, making “Broken” even more appealing to the ears. During all these segments, the basslines rumble, branding heftiness, clearness, and depth while binding guitars with rhythmic patterns. These low-ends resonate with those rich, deep, dense, and heavy notes, providing groove and detail that suits generous servings of distortion. The exceptional drumming performance based upon tastefully assembled beats, breaks, fills, and other percussive acrobatics bring more groove and pace to the table while keeping the remainder of the instrumentations in line. Each instrument has its place and purpose here, making “Broken” such an incredible track.

Deflecting Ghosts has created another excellent track that brings everything you ever needed from modern alternative rock music. It’s a masterpiece that demonstrates their songwriting and composition to the max. Their experience, knowledge, skills, and talent shine through fascinating ideas and musicianship, the qualities that define and position “Broken” as one of the finest alternative rock tracks this year. Therefore, head to your favorite streaming platforms and check it out.
