WOOF – LICK!

LICK!” is the latest single by WOOF, an excellent American artist based in Chicago, Illinois. It’s his first piece of work this year and the fifth standalone single, arriving as an adequate follow-up of “Hunt,” “Betrayal,” “Crime,” and “Stings,” four incredible compositions released throughout 2024 that you should also check out as soon as possible. Still, WOOF’s latest single arrives with many innovations in songwriting, composing, arranging, recording, and producing, showcasing the natural progression of an already exceptional artist. Lyrically and aesthetically, “LICK!” draws inspiration from the energy of late-night city vibes. Sonically, WOOF combines a singer-songwriter approach with some of the finest properties borrowed from several complementary music genres. Perhaps post-punk comes to mind, but you’ll also notice how some of the finest properties borrowed from shoegaze, goth rock, darkwave, and synthwave found their way into this sonic equation. WOOF uses all these additional elements as more than necessary enhancements, accentuations, decorations, and other details to elevate his music to new heights while remaining loyal to the primary sonic direction. His music dominantly resonates with sound quality that meets all the trends of modern music production yet you’ll notice a subtle touch of nostalgia lurking around. This collision between contemporary and retro sound makes “LICK!” such a catchy, memorable, engaging composition that will not only resonate with post-punk fans but also those music listeners looking for tastefully assembled and expertly performed music.

As soon as you press play, this composition immediately wraps around your listening apparatus and refuses to let go long after it ends. WOOF thought about everything while assembling this fine piece of sonic artistry, so you’ll instantly notice how “LICK!” arrives with a perfect structure, adorned with many profoundly detailed segments, brilliant ideas, and marvelous instrumentations. Each vocal, sonic, and rhythmic maneuver has its place and purpose in this sonic equation, making it such a pleasant listening experience worth repeating over and over again. WOOF’s soulful, passionate, sincere, confident, emotional, powerful vocal performance shines from scratch to finish. He elevates the entire song to new heights, commands attention, and guides the listening apparatus with precision and finesse. His calm, soothing, relaxing, ethereal voice seamlessly glides over all those low, mid, and high notes, emphasizing everything he intended to achieve with this track. Besides decorating all these segments and instrumentations, these vocal harmonies contribute emotional depth and complexity to an already intricate song structure. In the meantime, the impressive guitar works shape a perfect backdrop for all the vocals to shine upon. You’ll notice how cleverly guitar interplays lurk around, providing that reverby, dark, gloomy ambiance that perfectly pairs all the vocals. The comprehensive collection of jangly, angular yet distorted chord progressions, riffs, harmonies, melodies, themes, leads, and other sonic maneuvers decorates this composition and makes it an incredible listening experience worth repeating over and over again.

Of course, this composition wouldn’t sound this good without an equally impressive rhythm section. You’ll notice how all those intricate, vividly hearable, warm-sounding basslines rumble beneath the guitars, providing more than necessary heaviness, clarity, and depth while simultaneously serving like a glue that binds all those mentioned orchestrations with rhythmic sequences. These low-ends are luxuriant, deep, dense, and heavy, contributing more detail, groove, and power to this marvelous song. In the meantime, the programmed rhythmic patterns based upon perfectly arranged, well-accentuated, dynamic beats, breaks, fills, and other percussive acrobatics keep everything in line while dictating groover and pace. You’ll notice how each hit of the snare, kick of the bass drum, and splash over the cymbals cuts through the calm, soothing, relaxing, ethereal ambiance, making “LICK!” even more detailed and appealing to the ears. WOOF thought about everything while writing, composing, arranging, recording, and producing this track and he unquestionably poured heart and soul into it, resulting in a beautiful post-punk composition that will immediately resonate with the crowd. “LICK!” vividly showcases his skills, creativity, talent, knowledge, and experience. It’s one of those songs that immediately gets into your head and refuses to let go long after the last notes and beats fade. Therefore, you should immediately place this post-punk masterpiece on your music radar. “LICK!” is available on all streaming platforms. Don’t miss it!
