A little over a year since her enchanted album Spells of Silence captivated the hearts of KEXP, Bandcamp Daily, the Seattle Times, and audiences who had the pleasure of witnessing her other-worldly performances, Mt Fog is ready to unveil her eagerly anticipated next act. The album, ultraviolet heart machine, marks a significant evolution in Mt Fog’s musical adventure. This release takes a different path. No longer a solo sorceress, Carolyn, flanked by the wizardry of Andy Sells (Select Level, FCS North, Afrocop) and Casey Rosebridge (Crazy Eyes), transforms Mt Fog into a lush trio. The result is a melodic journey that weaves live instruments into a tapestry of freshness, allure, and occasionally heart-wrenching soundscapes.

The album’s opening track sweeps us into Carolyn’s lyrical labyrinth with the haunting proclamation: “Pick up pieces in the way I’ll make a sculpture /This will all make sense one day.” These words unlock the album’s secret garden, revealing a central theme: metamorphosis. In geology, diagenesis encompasses the diverse changes that living organisms undergo on our transformation into dirt and ultimately fossils, a process mediated by time and pressure. It’s a fitting metaphor for Carolyn’s personal evolution, which began in January 2023 when Mt Fog expanded to include Sells and Rosebridge into its magical realm. Navigating the complexities of love blossoming while her decades long relationship broke apart, she sought solace in music.

The resulting album is a testament to this turbulent period in Carolyn’s life and how love transforms us. Tracks such as “Losing Little Pieces” and “Soft Center” confront the relationship unraveling, with the latter written on a poignant Valentine’s Day. It captures the bittersweet emotions of tenderness that have hardened over time. Conversely, songs like “Cosmic Things,” “It’s Mycelial,” and “Crumbling” shine a light on the hope of new love taking root. It’s a reflection of the desire for a fresh beginning and a profound, cosmic love that echoes through every note. This album is deeply personal yet universally resonant, as it delves into the universal human experiences of grief and love.
