Mantarochen – In The Badgers Cave 7″ (It’s Eleven Records)

Mantarochen‘s latest 7″ record, “In The Badger’s Cave,” is a fascinating fusion of dark wave, coldwave, synthwave, and post-punk. This EP is an enthralling journey into a shadowy, energetic, and danceable soundscape that delights the listener from start to finish. From the moment the needle drops, the record introduces a comprehensive collection of themes, leads, melodies, harmonies, arpeggiated chord progressions, sequences, and ambiances. The semi-distorted synth low-ends provide a stable, heavy, and clear foundation, enriching the overall depth of the tracks. These elements merge to form an immersive and haunting sound, wrapping the listener in a warm, albeit slightly chilly, embrace akin to a golden-silver foil rescue blanket.

The dynamic rhythmic patterns are a highlight of this record. Cleverly arranged beats, breaks, fills, and percussive acrobatics create a profound sense of movement and groove. These rhythmic structures not only keep the instrumentation in line but also dictate the tempo, driving these six songs mercilessly yet effortlessly toward the harmonious collision. The rhythm machine propels the tracks with a relentless, hypnotic and invigorating energy from scratch to finish, ensuring that even the pickiest listeners will enjoy this material. The lead vocal performance on “In The Badger’s Cave” is exceptional, commanding attention from the first note while seamlessly balancing between low, mid, and high notes and guiding the listener through the EP’s dark and atmospheric journey. The voice hovers above the instrumentation, delivering lyrics with sincerety, confidence, power, and passion.

Recorded and mixed by the band members, this record showcases their impressive DIY ethic and attention to detail. The mastering by Jean-Baptiste Meyrieux (of Broncho Libre & Laxisme) ensures a slightly polished and cohesive sound, bringing out the best in each track. “In The Badger’s Cave” is a highly recommended 7″ record for fans of dark wave, coldwave, synthwave, and post-punk music. Mantarochen has crafted a deeply atmospheric and irresistibly danceable EP, with a sound that is dark yet inviting. Available via It’s Eleven Records, this record is a must-listen for anyone looking to dive into the depths of Leipzig’s underground music scene. This EP feels like an infusion of cool, captivating energy, spreading through your senses. Mantarochen has once again proven their ability to create innovative and deeply emotional music, making “In The Badger’s Cave” an essential addition to any music collection.
