Mourning Noise – Screams / Dreams CD (Cleopatra Records)

Mourning Noise’s “Screams / Dreams,” released in June 2024 via Cleopatra Records, marks a triumphant return for this horror punk band, delivering a potent mix of dark themes and high-energy punk rock. Produced by Steve Zing, a veteran of the genre, this album encapsulates the essence of Mourning Noise’s unique sound while introducing fresh elements that keep it relevant for today’s listeners.

The album kicks off with “Black Cadillac,” a fast and furious opener that immediately draws you into the band’s macabre world. The tight, aggressive guitar work and pounding drums set a relentless pace that continues throughout the album. This track is followed by the title song “Screams / Dreams,” which balances melodic hooks with gritty punk aesthetics, creating a memorable anthem that’s both haunting and catchy. Tracks like “We Want You Dead” and “Kiss of Death” highlight the band’s ability to blend horror-themed lyrics with raw punk energy. The former is particularly notable for its relentless tempo and chilling vocal delivery, while the latter features a memorable chorus that’s sure to be a hit during live performances.

Midway through the album, “Frozen Fever” and “Sin” showcase a slightly different side of Mourning Noise. These tracks incorporate more complex arrangements and slower tempos, allowing for a deeper exploration of the band’s darker lyrical themes. “Frozen Fever” stands out with its eerie ambiance and lyrical depth, while “Sin” offers a powerful commentary on personal and societal struggles. The latter half of the album includes standout tracks like “Island of Unknown” and “Empty Streets,” which maintain the album’s high energy while exploring new lyrical territories. “The Changeling” and “Stranger Hearts” provide a nostalgic nod to the band’s early influences, blending classic punk elements with modern production techniques. The album closes with “Embalmed with Love” and “Angel Lounge,” two tracks that perfectly encapsulate Mourning Noise’s horror punk ethos. “Embalmed with Love” is particularly noteworthy for its dramatic lyrics and dynamic shifts, while “Angel Lounge” ends the album on a high note with its infectious energy and memorable melody.

“Screams / Dreams” exemplifies Mourning Noise’s enduring appeal and artistic growth. The album successfully bridges the gap between classic horror punk and contemporary sound, making it a must-listen for long-time fans and newcomers alike. With its compelling mix of dark themes, powerful performances, and top-notch production, this album solidifies Mourning Noise’s place in the horror rock pantheon.
