Kallai – Palisades

Palisades” is the latest single by Kallai, an outstanding Portland-based quartet. It’s their second single in 2024, serving as an adequate follow-up to “Always/Never,” their debut track released earlier this year. Still, “Palisades” delivers many innovations in songwriting, composing, arranging, and producing. Their debut song leaned towards shoegaze, while “Palisades” showcases their admiration for post-punk sound. You’ll also notice how some of the finest properties borrowed from darkwave, synthwave, goth rock, shoegaze, dream pop, and alternative found their way into this sonic equation. These experimentations with many different but complementary subgenres will unquestionably appeal to your listening apparatus, as their latest single showcases many marvelous ideas and exceptional musicianship colliding harmoniously throughout the entire track. Also, it’s good to mention that all these additional elements are acting as enhancements while the band remains loyal to the synthy post-punk sound.

As soon as you press play, you’ll notice how much effort Kallai invested into their number. “Palisades” arrives with a perfectly arranged song structure, stacked with many delicate segments revealing impressive orchestrations. Each new section gradually unveils more instrumentations, details, and nuances, making this mesmerizing composition even more pleasing to the listening apparatus. The song commences with intricate, vividly hearable, slightly distorted basslines, offering heaviness, clarity, and depth to the calm, soothing, relaxing, ethereal, ambiance. In the meantime, rhythmic sequences based upon tastefully assembled, flawlessly performed, well-accentuated, moderate beats, breaks, fills, and other percussive acrobatics dictate groove and tempo while simultaneously holding all the instrumentations together. The rhythm section plays a significant role in propelling this marvelous composition to new heights, and you’ll notice how much attention to detail these profoundly talented musicians invested in it.

You’ll be impressed by the magnificent, otherwordly, expertly composed leads, themes, melodies, harmonies, chord progressions, and other sonic maneuvers delivered on keys and synths. These particular instrumentations give that familiar goth rock, post-punk, dark-wave, and synthwave vibes to the song, evoking some nostalgia while directly paying homage to the contemporary music scene. You’ll hear how all these orchestrations levitate between all the significant eras of the mentioned genres, but still, their music sounds so fresh, unique, and innovative, demonstrating their signature moves. Of course, this number wouldn’t be complete without the guitars. Like other instrumentations, Kallai paid a lot of attention to all the guitar works, so you’ll stumble upon many exceptional melodies, harmonies, chord progressions, and riffs, masterfully drenched into omnipresent studio reverb. This move gives a more echoic, melancholic, emotive touch to the song while paying homage to the eighties and nineties shoegaze music. However, the singer steals the show here with his outstanding vocal performance. You’ll hear how his vocal harmonies balance low, mid, and high notes, emphasizing everything the remainder of the band tried to achieve with this track.

With “Palisades,” Kallai embrace everything you dearly love about post-punk, shoegaze, goth rock, darkwave, and synth music. Their collective experience and knowledge are omnipresent in the mix, while their ideas and musicianship shine in the limelight during every segment. You should put “Palisades” on your radar as soon as possible because it’s one of the best post-punk tracks this year. The single is available on all streaming platforms. Don’t miss it!
