Russ Nelson – 5 AM

5 AM” is the latest single by Russ Nelson, a Butte, Montana-based alternative rock artist. It’s his first single this year, arriving as an adequate follow-up to “The Villain” and “Crap Of The World,” two excellent tracks released in 2023. Inspired by T.S. Eliot’s “The Hollow Man,” the song captures the sense of alienation and existential angst prevailing in society. Soundwise, perhaps Russ Nelson embraces the fundamentals of alternative rock sound, but you’ll unquestionably notice how many different but complementary music genres found their way into this fine piece of sonic artistry. You’ll undoubtedly stumble upon all the vital qualities of emo, pop-punk, post-punk, post-rock, indie-rock, grunge, etc. The artist uses all these additional elements as more than necessary enhancements, accentuations, decorations, and other details to uplift his latest single on an entirely new level while simultaneously remaining loyal to the primary sonic direction. Therefore, these experimentations with different but complementary styles resulted in a number suitable for all those listeners looking for flawlessly assembled alternative rock music.

As soon as you press play, you’ll notice that Russ Nelson’s approach to alternative rock sound differs from anything you can currently hear on the scene. He breaks the rules and shapeshifts the boundaries by incorporating some of the finest ideas and exceptional musicianship into it. There are those sonic ingredients that we mentioned before, backing up his approach to the max. The guitars shine in this sonic equation. Their importance is immeasurable, and you’ll immediately hear how they resonate with tremendous power. The interplay between rhythm and lead guitars acts as an adequate backdrop that supports Russ Nelson’s vocal performance. You’ll notice how the heavy chord progressions and riffs strike from one side while the other offers calm, soothing, relaxing, ethereal leads, themes, melodies, harmonies, and arpeggiated chord progressions. These dualities shape a delicate and complex ambiance that resonates from scratch to finish. However, Nelson’s outstanding vocal performance steals the show here. His skillful balance between low, mid, and high notes emphasizes all the segments and instrumentations, offering another layer of complexity to the song.

The artist also thought about the rhythm section, so you’ll stumble upon all those equally complex, vividly hearable, warm-sounding basslines rumbling beneath the guitar layers. These low-ends offer more than necessary heaviness, clarity, and depth, but also act as a glue by binding the mentioned instrumentations with drums. Speaking of drums, the drumming performance is another exceptional feature, as Russ Nelson included many cleverly arranged, moderate, well-accentuated beats, breaks, fills, and percussive acrobatics. These rhythmic maneuvers dictate groove and tempo but also keep the remainder of the orchestrations in line. Everything sounds top-notch, ensuring a delightful listening experience for anyone even remotely into modern alternative rock music. With this song, Russ Nelson achieved something many experienced alternative rock artists failed to achieve. He breathed fresh air into a longevous genre, making the alternative music exciting again. He poured all his knowledge, skills, talent, and ideas into it, and his efforts resulted in a magnificent song worth repeating over and over again. You should put Russ Nelson’s music on your radar as soon as possible. The single is available on all streaming platforms. Don’t miss it!
