“Douse” is the latest single by Down The Lees, a superb Canadian trio. It’s their first single in 2024 and an adequate follow-up of “Christmas Tribute,” “Since La Vie En Rose,” and “Dead And Over,” three exceptional tracks released in 2023. Soundwise, Down The Lees combines many different but complementary music genres to illustrate such rich and luxurious sonic imagery. Perhaps grunge comes to mind first, but you’ll notice how some other genres found their way into this marvelous sonic equation. Don’t be surprised if you stumble upon sonic ingredients borrowed from alternative, post-hardcore, post-rock, noise rock, stoner, sludge, etc. Down The Lees use these additional elements as more than necessary enhancements, accentuations, and other details that unquestionably uplift their song on an entirely new level, while the band remains loyal to the primary sonic direction. Therefore, these experimentations with different but complementary music genres resulted in a mesmerizing composition that will appeal to even the pickiest listeners.
As soon as you press play, you’ll notice that Laura Lee Schultz’s exceptional vocal performance serves as a centerpiece, emphasizing all the segments and instrumentations with such precision and finesse. These vocal harmonies glide over low, mid, and high notes with such ease, while the perfect balance between clean singing, shouts, and screams adds a touch of complexity. You’ll also hear how the guitars act as a perfect backbone that supports all these vocal maneuvers. The tastefully assembled leads, themes, melodies, harmonies, chord progressions, and riffs shine in the mix, while the generous servings of distortion add a touch of rawness, abrasiveness, and fuzziness.
Of course, Down The Lees also thought about the rhythm section. The equally complex, vividly hearable, warm-sounding low-end notes offer more heaviness, clarity, and depth, but also serve as a binding element between guitars and drums. In the meantime, the outstanding drumming performance dictates groove and tempo by delivering robust, well-accentuated beats, breaks, fills, and other percussive acrobatics. The band thoroughly planned the entire structure, so “Douse” arrives with cleverly assembled segments, fully stacked with impressive vocal articulations, sonic maneuvers, and rhythmic structures. The song gradually becomes even more complex, offering orchestrations that draw you in with every note and beat delivered. Down The Lees are not joking around with their music, and that’s notable as soon as the track commences. Their ability to breathe fresh air in so many music genres at once showcases all their knowledge, experience, skills, and talent. They invested so many brilliant ideas and exceptional musicianship, so the pleasant listening experience is more than guaranteed. The single is available on all streaming platforms. Don’t miss it!
