Wotts – Petals

Petals” is the latest single by Wotts, an Ottawa-based indie duo. It’s the final release that announces their upcoming EP. Lyrically, the song talks about deepest emotions, exploring the theme of unrequited love and realizing it was never meant to be. Soundwise, Wotts are masters in combining many different but complementary music genres without losing their signature sound. Perhaps they take all the vital elements of contemporary indie music, but you’ll notice how other genres, like dream pop or psych-pop, found their way into this sonic equation. They combine all these elements with so much precision and finesse, so “Petals” will undoubtedly suit even the pickiest indie fans.

Like their previous works, Wotts thoroughly planned the entire song structure, so “Petals” arrives with many segments where pleasant vocals and instrumentations shine in the limelight. Once again, the exceptional vocal harmonies play a significant role in shaping such a rich and luxurious ambiance by emphasizing everything Wotts tried to achieve instrumentally. The perfect balance between low, mid, and high notes gives a sense of unison, offers a dosage of complexity, but also guides the listener from scratch to finish. You’ll also notice generous servings of reverb and echo effects, giving more calm, soothing, relaxing, ethereal qualities to the vocals.

Wotts incorporate some of the finest instrumentations throughout the entire song. You’ll hear the layer of synth leads, themes, melodies, harmonies, and ambiances, gliding over the remainder of the orchestrations and offering more than a necessary complexity. In the meantime, tastefully distorted guitars punch from beneath with the same amount of leads, melodies, chord progressions, and riffs. You’ll notice how the guitars serve as a perfect backdrop for the vocals. Wotts also thought about the low-ends, and these equally complex, vividly hearable, warm-sounding basslines offer heaviness clarity, and depth. “Petals” wouldn’t sound this good without an outstanding drumming performance, based upon energetic, well-accentuated rhythmic sequences and other percussive acrobatics. Everything sounds top-notch from the begining to the end, proving Wotts are not joking around with their music.

“Petals” is one of those indie songs you should immediately put on your radar because Wotts invested nothing but brilliant ideas and exceptional musicianship into it. They poured all their experience, knowledge, skills, and talent, so their effort paid off in a magnificent modern track that will suit even those who’re stumbling upon indie music for the first time. The single is available on all streaming platforms. Don’t miss it!
