Alkaline Trio reveals a darker dimension of its forthcoming new album with “Versions of You,” the third advance offering from Blood, Hair, and Eyeballs, out January26 on RiseRecords.
Built upon a hypnotic, off-kilter riff that provides the foundation for an impassioned performance from bassist/vocalist DanAndriano and sublime harmonizing with guitarist/vocalist MattSkiba, “Versions of You” is both instantly recognizable as signature Alkaline Trio and utterly unique in the band’s discography. Featuring the stellar production skills of GRAMMY winner Cameron Webb, “Versions of You” kicks off 2024 in style with the kind of sinister and sweet earworm only Alkaline Trio can create.
Andriano recalls the song’s genesis, “From the start there was something really exciting about this one, a raw energy we didn’t want to let go. I was playing guitar and showing a part to Cameron, Matt grabbed a bass and created this killer disjointed groove under what became the verse. It felt raw and ferocious, and we knew that’s what we had to capture, so that’s how we did it when the red light came on.”
Of the lyrics that completed “Versions of You,” Andriano adds, “It’s a song about sorting through the rubble of a broken friendship and realizing there’s just nothing there to try and rebuild… that maybe the whole thing was artificial and driven by self-serving motives.”
“Versions of You” arrives in the wake of the “crunchy, catchy” (BROOKLYN VEGAN) “Bad Time” and the “fresh approach” (CONSEQUENCE) of the album’s title track. Blood, Hair, and Eyeballs was recorded by Skiba, Andriano and since-departed drummer DerekGrant with Webb producing at Studio 606 in Northridge CA, and will be the first AlkalineTrio album to be released via the band’s new label home, RiseRecords.
