Izae – Zanzibar LP (Geenger Records)

We have some more exciting music from a Geenger Records workshop today. “Zanzibar” is the latest full-length release by Izae, released yesterday by the prolific Croatian record label. You should put Izae on your radar as soon as possible because this Dubrovnik trio does not disappoint. Their previous record, “Kvamb,” was such a fine piece of sonic artistry, and since I heard news about “Zanzibar,” I had high hopes for this record too. Thankfully, Izae consists of experienced musicians with decades of performing and recording, and once again, they managed to deliver fifteen excellent compositions. Now, some reader might think that fifteen tracks for an indie record are a bit overwhelming, but hear me out, Izae know what they are doing, and they’re doing their thing pretty damn good.

I adore how they retained the essence of their sound. Their minimalist approach to indie sound is that tiny detail that fascinated me the most, but on the other hand, their songs were always profoundly complex in one way or another. Izae has its ways of grabbing your attention, and once you delve deep into their sonic universe, there’s no turning back. Like their previous recordings, “Zanzibar” sounds like music from an entirely different universe. Their ability to always sound innovative, fresh, unique, and far from anything Western indie bands offer at the moment is nearly mindblowing. However, this time Izae showcases more intricate instrumentations, with Jadranka Katić’s charismatic voice remaining as the centerpiece. Of course, Izae fully stacked their songs with impressive themes, leads, melodies, harmonies, and chord progressions. The equally detailed, vividly hearable basslines offer more heaviness, depth, and clarity to the mix, while the percussions dictate groove and pace, contribute with various accentuations, and keep the remainder of the instrumentations in line.

Still, Jadranka Katić’s exceptional vocal performance steals the show here. She unquestionably knows how to keep listeners engaged through vivid, poetic, storytelling lyricism and marvelous harmonies. It’s also good to mention that various electronic and synth sequences, melodies, themes, and ambiances also play significant roles in shaping a mesmerizing, ethereal, easy-listening atmosphere. Izae know what works the best for their music, and they always ultimately succeed in delivering a top-notch sonic experience. Perhaps their music carries all the vital elements of indie sound, but many other elements are involved in the process. You’ll stumble on minimal electronica, minimal pop, and even some reggae and dub. Still, Izae sounds innovative, fresh, and unique, so you’ll have a hard time categorizing their music into a singular music genre. “Zanzibar” is unquestionably an album you should put on your radar because Izae know how to put their listeners in a good mood. This album is all about diving deep into the calm, soothing, relaxing, ethereal ambiance and having a good time listening to it. “Zanzibar” is available on vinyl and streaming platforms. Head to Geenger Records for more information about ordering this gem.
