Girls In Synthesis – Die Leere 12″ EP (Hound Gawd! Records)

Die Leere,” the new 12″ EP by Girls In Synthesis, is a brilliant release that not only serves as a worthy follow-up to their previous critically acclaimed full-length album, “The Rest Is Distraction,” but also showcases several innovations in songwriting, composing, and producing. This material features both original and dub versions of “I Know No Other Way,” “Sinking Feeling,” and “Against The Seething.” These compositions demonstrate their ability to retain the initial sonic direction but also reflect their willingness to explore new, more experimental territories.

Girls In Synthesis has taken a slightly different approach with “Die Leere” by slightly reducing the amount of distortion in their sound. Therefore, themes, leads, melodies, chord progressions, and riffs are more hearable than ever before. However, the band has not completely abandoned the archaic and dissonant sonic maneuvers that always defined their music. Instead, these elements are still present in each composition but showcased with a more articulated and defined direction. The basslines serve as a solid backdrop for the beformentioned guitar experimentations, but they also offer more than necessary heaviness, clarity, and depth to these songs. The drumming remains energetic and dynamic, with intricate rhythmic structures, beats, breaks, fills, and other percussive maneuvers keeping their tracks dynamic as much as possible. As usual, the lead and back vocals shine from scratch to finish. They are the centerpiece in every composition, guiding the listeners through cleverly assembled soundscapes with exceptional storytelling lyricism. The lyrics are thought-provoking and evoke intense emotions, adding another layer of depth to the music.

“I Know No Other Way” is a standout track, with both the original and dub versions showcasing the band’s versatility and willingness to push boundaries. The dub version, in particular, stands out with its unique approach to sound manipulation and atmosphere. “Sinking Feeling” and “Against The Seething” further solidify Girls In Synthesis as one of the most significant bands on the contemporary post-punk scene, with their powerful sound and captivating song structures. Hound Gawd has once again done an exceptional job. The EP is pressed on high-quality, black 12″ vinyl and comes with a hefty and visually striking monochrome record sleeve. This attention to detail enhances the overall experience of the release and makes it a worthy addition to any music collection.

“Die Leere” is a magnificent post-punk gem that should not be missed. With its vividly hearable guitar maneuvers, complex basslines, energetic drumming, and exceptional vocal performances, this record exemplifies their artistic vision. Grab a copy and prepare to be captivated by Girls In Synthesis’s unique and powerful sound.
