The Sleeping Released New Single “Halcyon”

The Sleeping has shared “Halcyon”, the fourth single from the band’supcoming album I Feel Like I’m Becoming a Ghost, set for release this Friday, August 18th. The track showcases The Sleeping’s diverse songwriting capabilities, leaning more in the realm of artists like Interpol, while keeping an alternative edge. If the song’s standout bass line doesn’t reel you in, the moody, head spinning chorus will. Pulling through elements of dark and light, you’ll find bright tones accompanied by lyrics like “something evil coming to keep you here.” You can listen to “Halcyon” here now.

Speaking further on the lyrics, vocalist Douglas Robinson states:

“The definition of Halcyon is – ‘Denoting a period of time that was idyllically happy and peaceful.’ This song is written about the clash between holding onto the happiness I once had, while being hit with the heaviness of today’s world.”

The Sleeping will celebrate the new album with a record release show in New York City this Thursday, August 17th at Bowery Ballroom with support from Stand Still and Somerset Thrower. The band has also just announced they will be joining emo-greats Sunny Day Real Estate on five east coast tour dates from August 18th to 26th. Full routing below.

Heading into writing I Feel Like I’m Becoming a Ghost, The Sleeping’s only goal was to make a high energy, refreshing record based off the natural chemistry of the band. Marking their fifth album (following 2010’s The Big Deep) and first with guitarist Cameron Keym since the 2006 record Questions and Answers, it was important for the band, rounded out by Joe Zizzo (drums) and Sal Mignano (bass) to take the sound they were known for and build it into something new. Venturing into Applehead Studios in Woodstock, NY, it only took them two weeks to write and record the ten songs that appear on the record. You’ll hear tracks ranging from straight up alternative rock to post-punk inspired to seething post-hardcore, and some combination of all three. The album strongly focuses on mental health, while sonically gliding through melody, chaos, grooves and energetic parts to fit the theme of the lyrics. I Feel Like I’m Becoming a Ghost was produced by the band alongside the dynamic duo Mike Birnbaum and Chris Bittner (Coheed & Cambria, Medeski, Team Sleep) and mastered by Chris Athens (Beastie Boys, Blink 182).
