Japanese Jesus – Depression Breakfast LP (Blowtorch Records)

Depression Breakfast is the impressive debut EP release by Japanese Jesus, a relatively new Irish noise rock duo. This five-song material showcases their experimentation with different genres like noise rock, grunge, garage rock, punk rock, post-punk, and post-hardcore, resulting in a unique sound and style that will leave listeners craving more. The musicianship on Depression Breakfast is exceptional. Judging by their sound, both members of Japanese Jesus are very experienced, talented musicians who know their way around with their instruments. From the powerful riffs of the guitarist and vocalist to the driving beats of the drummer, the entire band is firing on all cylinders throughout the EP. There’s an additional depth and complexity to the band’s sound with their expert playing and creative ideas.

Another standout feature of Depression Breakfast is the incredible creativity and skill invested in songwriting, composing, recording, and producing this debut EP. All five songs on this EP carry impressive vocal and sonic maneuvers and various rhythmic acrobatics. Each track is dynamic and groovy and takes the listener on a wild ride from start to finish. From the opening track Insignificant, Japanese Jesus establishes an aggressive, intense, energetic atmosphere that never lets up throughout the entire EP. Heavily distorted riffs drive the song forward, while the additional layer of noise creates a wall of sound that is both chaotic and controlled. The song’s bridge is a particular standout, with the band building to a frenzied climax before dropping back down into the song’s main riff.

Tension showcases the band’s talent for crafting catchy, hook-filled songs that still pack a punch. The song’s chorus is impossible to get out of your head, while the verses are full of aggressive, post-hardcore/noise rock-inspired riffs that will make you want to mosh in your living room. Other highlights on Depression Breakfast include Eamon Dunphy (Is Always Grand), a complex, post-hardcore track that sees the band experimenting with time signatures and unusual rhythms; Lactose is a grunge-inspired song that features some of the band’s most emotive vocals and a melodic, yet heavy, guitar riff; and Depression Breakfast, a slow-burning, post-punk track that builds to a satisfyingly explosive conclusion.

Throughout the EP, Japanese Jesus shows an exceptional talent for blending different genres and creating a cohesive, unique sound that is all their own. While many bands attempt to merge different styles and sounds, few can do so with such skill and precision as Japanese Jesus. Depression Breakfast is a mind-blowing collection of songs from a band that is going places. The EP showcases Japanese Jesus’s exceptional musicianship, creativity, and talent, as well as their ability to create an aggressive, intensely dynamic, and groovy ambiance that will leave you breathless. Whether you’re a fan of noise rock, grunge, garage rock, punk rock, post-punk, or post-hardcore, Depression Breakfast is an EP that should not be missed.
