Spacepilot – Particle Horizon LP

Wow! The times I am impressed by three releases in a row from the same batch of vinyl records are always considered a sheer rarity. After all, how many times have you had a chance to listen to three excellent artists in a row? It’s a pretty damn rare occasion nowadays, right? Well, Springstoff somehow managed to impress me with a couple of releases, and I can’t thank them enough for doing it. Particle Horizon by Spacepilot is the third record from the particular batch I mentioned before. Although I wasn’t familiar with the previous works of this band, I have to admit Spacepilot blew me away with their unique style. It is not a style of music you stumble upon every day. Quite the contrary, it’s a rare gem worth listening over again until you destroy a needle on your turntable.

Right off the bat, I have to say this is not another punk rock vinyl record, and as much as you want it to read about punk-related releases, sometimes you need some music to chill out. Particle Horizon would be an excellent choice when you need some time to clear your head from stress, negative thoughts, or forget something you experienced at work. You might surprise when you hear it because Particle Horizon is a comprehensive amalgam of music genres that might not fit performed in any other way. Somehow Spacepilot fully stacked these tracks with the genres these musicians dearly love without making a compromise and rejecting some of them. You’ll hear spacey electronic music, post-rock, instrumental rock, jazz, ambient, and many more styles along the way. Spacepilot will let you decide what classification suits their luxurious sound because, after all, Particle Horizon possesses so many ingredients that make this record so perfect.

I am not quite sure if this is an entirely improvised set or the band somehow managed to sound fully-improvisational with pre-made compositions. It sounds free-improv jazzy to me, with generous chunks of post-rock and electronica included in the mix. Of course, you’ll notice these musicians are not joking around. Their experience is vividly hearable from scratch to finish, but what also blows my mind are their brilliant ideas included along the way. It is not a random pile of well-articulated sounds but multi-layered orchestrations cleverly assembled to satisfy even the pickiest listening apparatus. Maybe Particle Horizon will be too much for some listeners, but take a listen over again, and you’ll be good to go. It takes some time for some listeners to handle all the instrumentations involved, but once you spin this record a couple of times, you’ll understand the true beauty behind it. Particle Horizon by Spacepilot is available at Springstoff web store, so head over for more information about ordering.
