Former Member Reveals A New Album Manageable Scratches

Punk rock stalwart Jason Shevchuk (Kid Dynamite, None More Black, LaGrecia) and renowned Grammy-nominated music producer and drummer Will Yip have unveiled another installment of their groovy and riffy rock outfit Former Member. Their brand new collection of melancholy melodic rock ‘n’ roll songs, appropriately titled Manageable Scratches, was released today. In addition, limited edition vinyl is now available for pre-order in classic black, opaque maroon with galaxy effect, and opaque green with swirl via Memory Music Label.

Manageable Scratches takes a great deal of ‘70s rock, ‘80s thrash, and ‘90s punk and coalesces it in a ‘00s production blender. The tight production really makes the roughness of Shevchuk’s voice shine. It was produced, engineered, and mixed by Will Yip (Quicksand, Turnstile, Tigers Jaw) and mastered by Grammy-nominated mastering engineer Kim Rosen (Lifetime, Title Fight, Braid, Foxing). Musically, it nods to a lot but undeniably sounds like Shevchuk.

“Recording the vocals for this record took months because I had to wait for the house to be empty so I could shout without terrifying my 1-year-old son, which, during a pandemic, was a great challenge for me mentally,” explains Shevchuk. “In certain ways, this is the least amount of production that I’ve done on a record in a long time,” asserts Yip. “Jason sent me demos, I played drums to them, we reproduced the tracks, and he sang on it at home. I’ve always trusted his taste on songs and I couldn’t be more proud of the record.”

Jason Shevchuk is the mastermind behind Former Member. He’s best known for fronting influential Philadelphia-based hardcore punk band Kid Dynamite and New Jersey’s punk rock outfit None More Black. Will Yip is one of the most in-demand producers in independent music. His credits include a multitude of bands including The Menzingers, Circa Survive, Title Fight, and Bartees Strange. Prior to music production, Yip was a drummer and will always be a drummer at heart. He has played with everyone from Lauryn Hill to Shinsuke Nakamura and is even a partner in Blackwood Drum Company.
