Soft Fall is a debut full-length recording by Darkhues, a new solo project by Hugh Smith. After spending numerous years as a vocalist for groups, such as Haawaaiii, Glowdogs, and experimenting with solo projects in Berlin, Smith decided to focus on his brand new solo outlet. Soft Fall carries nine profoundly detailed compositions that explore the vast universe of complementary genres. Besides the sheer dominance of post-punk sound and aesthetics, you may also hear ingredients such as darkwave, new wave, goth rock, psychedelic, and electro. Smith combines all these elements into a harmonious slab of echoic melodies, harmonies, themes, accentuations, and rhythmic sequences.
Each composition contains enormous dosages of detailed segments, usually performed over synths, then layered by generous servings of reverb, delay, and echo. These effects are decorating the dark, psychedelic, melancholic aesthetics of the entire album, which resonates with the particular ambiance from beginning to end. Soft Fall is recorded and produced in West Auckland by Hugh Smith. The album is available on streaming platforms, such as Spotify, and Bandcamp.
