Gun Laws Are Back With ‘Deals! Deals! Deals!’

Naarm/Melbourne post-punk outfit Gun Laws return with ‘Deals! Deals! Deals!’, a volatile and dynamic new single driven by the band’s trademark urgency, four-way vocal interplay and an unrelenting energy. Moving through sharp shifts in intensity, the track confronts the unforgiving challenges of life and the compromises we make navigating them.

Written during dark periods for vocalists Jordie and Elisa, the song’s verses emerge from complex personal experiences: the highs and lows of parenthood amid relationship breakdown, and the debilitating effects of depression. Together, their stories form a portrait of people pushed to the edge and holding on through adversity. The track champions a collective refusal to sell out or let go of hope, because even in its darkest hour – life is beautiful.

Sonically, there’s a lot to unpack. While Gun Laws’ members came up through punk, hardcore and metal bands, the aggression of those formative years has evolved into something more expansive. Post-punk and new wave collide with jazz, soul, electronic and experimental composition. Gun Laws’ ‘Deals! Deals! Deals!’ also showcases the band’s distinctive approach to vocals, with four members sharing the microphone. It’s a dynamic that has become a defining part of their sound and live shows.

Jake and Matt first met as teenagers in Adelaide, forming punk band Jerks and building a cult following through DIY shows in lounge rooms, vacant lots and parking garages before releasing two albums and an EP. After years spent across Adelaide, Melbourne and Scotland, the pair reunited with longtime friend Jordie in Naarm to form Gun Laws in 2019, releasing their self-titled debut in 2020 and second LP ‘Merzbau Burning’ in 2022. Originally a three-piece, Gun Laws gradually expanded with Elisa on vocals and Waldie on saxophone, both initially joining as guests before becoming full-time members by 2024.

‘Deals! Deals! Deals!’ was recorded with Rohan Sforcina, with the bed tracks captured at Sydney Road Studios in Coburg before vocals and saxophone were completed at a studio in Mont Albert. The track was mastered by Adelaide-based Adam Collins.
