As if spilling right out of some portal from the past, smack into the middle of the 2020’s, BIRDLEGS pairs Jade Puget (AFI), Gary Gutfeld (CORDUROY, HI-FIVES), and Eric Ozenne (THE NERVE AGENTS, UNIT PRIDE) came up together in Northern California’s East Bay, REDEMPTION 87 in the late 1990’s. Now joining up with Ryan Doria (OVEREXPOSURE and PRESSURE CRACKS). This is not a rehash of the same old ways seeking to resurrect 1987 hardcore practices, this is a relevant fusion of old school hardcore punk with a myriad of edges being pushed in all directions.
The first single “Mind In The Margins” discusses the perils of social media and it’s effect on society at large.
Vocalist Eric Ozenne adds:
“Frustrated by the destabilizing force of social media and its intentionally addictive program design. The question that the song ‘Mind In the Margins’ asks is ‘do you mind?’ being clueless to what is happening to you when you use social media apps? ‘Do you mind’ that society is being shaped by unscrupulous characters who hold so much power? ‘Do you mind your mind being syphoned and sculpted for profit and experimentation?”
BIRDLEGS unleashes a barrage of frenzied and relevant new hardcore music into the fray. Jade Puget returns to the dark hardcore punk guitar found on AFI’s Black Sails In The Sunset and Ozenne’s howls take us to a time when THE NERVE AGENTS were one of the best live punk bands of their generation and vanished mysteriously at the top of their game. BIRDLEGS aggressive offerings are showcased by Ryan and Garys rhythmic pounding that serves to tether what feels like controlled chaos. BIRDLEGS are taking a swipe at the current unraveling state of affairs individually and collectively. There are questions to be asked of ourselves and BIRDLEGS has emerged with heart, with urgency, and as a voice outside the status quo to ask such questions.
