Baton Rouge’s occult-tinged emotional hardcore band Spiritiste release their politically charged debut, Excommunication Hymns, out October 31 via Protagonist and Tor Johnson Records. Across ten cathartic tracks, the band tackles religious and political oppression while reflecting on survival in a turbulent world. Drawing influence from ’90s hardcore acts Shotmaker and Portraits of Past, noise-rock innovators Jesus Lizard and Chat Pile, and contemporary screamo like State Faults, Spiritiste balance chaos with hope. Produced by Matt Bear and mastered by Alan Douches, the album showcases shifting dynamics—from controlled intensity to sonic bedlam. “Now I Am Become…” exemplifies cinematic storytelling and emotional catharsis.
