June Cleaver & The Steak Knives Reimagine Tomorrow With “This Was The Future”

With a name as curious as their sound, June Cleaver & The Steak Knives deliver a sharply satirical vision of modern life in their latest indie-pop single, This Was The Future. Blending the punch of post-punk with the glossy glow of synthwave, the track is a sonic paradox—retro-futurist yet vividly present.

Lifted from their critically acclaimed album Short Tales of Science Fiction and Family Dissonance, the song pulses with urgency, reflecting on the promise of a future that never arrived and the emotional debris left behind. Polished production masks a lingering unease, a stylistic hallmark for the band, who weave together themes of identity, isolation, and societal absurdity.

“This Was The Future” captures a kind of disoriented nostalgia, like flipping through a family photo album in an abandoned spaceship. Drawing influence from The Beatles to Devo, June Cleaver & The Steak Knives conjure a playful yet poignant exploration of connection in a digitally fractured world.

Already streaming on Spotify and Apple Music, the single positions the group as avant-pop storytellers for the disenchanted. If this is what the future sounds like, it’s equal parts heartbreak, wit, and synth-laced catharsis.
