Searows (aka Alec Duckart) discovered his creative voice by posting gorgeous but fleeting showcases of his songwriting to TikTok. Dozens of minute-long expressions of unadorned songwriting found a cult following but were never fully realized as complete songs. With this in mind, Duckart entered the studio earlier this year with the aim of “completing” some of the songs that touched a fervent chord with his audience several years ago. ‘martingale’ is a fruit of these labors, transforming the original demo into something lush, spacious and powerfully emotive, without ever losing the intimacy of those original bedroom recordings. Searows headed into the studio over the summer to bring the song to completion with producer Jonathan Pearce (The Beths).

Searows shares, “I began writing Martingale in 2022 while contemplating the traits and ways of being that we inherit from our families and the people closest to us. This song was initially two different unfinished songs I’d posted on TikTok about a year apart from each other, and it wasn’t until a few months ago that I realized they were meant to be one song. I decided to fully flesh it out, record it in a studio and give it a home in my upcoming project.“

Searows is the moniker of Alec Duckart, a Pacific Northwest singer-songwriter and guitarist. Duckart’s hushed and compelling debut album, Guard Dog, was released independently, soon finding an audience that were already sharing snippets of his music via communities on TikTok. With no real expectations for where he wanted the music to land, the album was greeted fondly and received co-signs from prominent indie artists Ethel Cain and Gracie Abrams, both of whom he has since supported on tour.

Searows’ sound often feels like Duckart is singing directly and solely to you, the listener, and as an admirer of the likes of Sufjan Stevens and Bon Iver, it similarly hits a raw nerve. Duckart has written and produced all of his own music to date.

‘martingale’ is Searows’ latest release via Last Recordings On Earth, a label launched by Matt Maltese in association with Communion Records. It follows his acclaimed 2023 EP, End Of The World, and fan favourite, ‘House Song’.

This month sees Searows embark on his first full headline tour of the UK and Europe, with the first of two nights at London’s Village Underground already sold out. Venues in Dublin and Glasgow have also been upgraded due to demand. See below for the full list of dates.
