Kevlar Bikini’s – Hi-Fi Or Die LP

Kevlar Bikini‘s “Hi-Fi Or Die” is not just another regular full-length album you stumble upon on streaming services every day; it’s a rowdy sonic voyage through the raw, untamed landscapes of noise rock, garage, post-hardcore, hardcore, and metal. Released back in 2014 as their second full-length offering, this album marked a significant milestone for the band, showcasing their original vocalist before Mario Berta took the lead vocal duties. But more than just a change in lineup, “Hi-Fi Or Die” represents a sonic evolution for Kevlar Bikini, as they boldly push the boundaries of their sound to a whole new level.

As soon as you press play, it’s more than clear that Kevlar Bikini means business. The lead vocalist’s semi-distorted, melodic voice commands attention, expertly interweaving through the colossal walls of cleverly assembled noise with sincerity, confidence, and emotiveness that refuses to let go. His vocal range is nothing short of impressive, striking the perfect balance between low, mid, and high notes, while powerful shouts and occasional screams add layers of intensity to the mix. But the frontman isn’t the only person shining on this material. Mario Berta’s guitars act as the perfect backdrop, shaping a rich and luxurious ambiance that oscillates between fuzzy, heavily distorted leads and calm, palm-muted moments. The occasional melodies, harmonies, and leads are charming, hypnotic, and irresistible, exemplifying Berta’s careful planning.

Of course, no noise rock album would be complete without a solid rhythm section, and Kevlar Bikini delivers in spades. Vladimir Kasal’s basslines offer the necessary heaviness and depth, binding the guitars with the drums in a tight blend of aggression and clarity. Meanwhile, Vedran Ernjaković’s drumming performance is nothing short of outstanding, dictating groove and tempo with dynamic, powerful beats that steer attention from start to finish. But what truly sets “Hi-Fi Or Die” apart is its fearless embrace of experimentation. While firstly channeling everything you love about noise rock, garage, post-hardcore, hardcore, and metal, Kevlar Bikini isn’t afraid to push the envelope, incorporating a myriad of ideas and instrumentations that add layers of complexity and depth to their sound.

Standout tracks like “Woo?!” “Hoax Revolution,” “Human Spittoon,” “Summer Of Hate,” “Hit-It-Right-Or-Go-Home,” “Climax” and “Anti-Rock” demand repeated listening, but the entire album exemplifies their musical experience, knowledge, skills, talent, and ideas. And if the music alone wasn’t enough to entice you, the LP version comes housed in a high-quality record sleeve adorned by striking, colorful artwork. “Hi-Fi Or Die” is a must-listen for anyone with a penchant for flawlessly executed noise rock music.
